Dyslexia in Russia
« on: March 23, 2006, 02:57:10 AM »
We were talking about this yesterday, one of Nadia's classmates (she's at uni in UK) claims she has dyslexia and the UK Gov kindly gives dyslexics a laptop, and indeed a dictaphone. It is true because my brother did the same!

Begs the question why is she studying languages and not some subject without such importance in words......

Anyway not to put too fine a point on this I wonder if others have experienced the FSU belief that dyslexic just means stupid or didn't pay attention in English class at school? I must admit, being of the 'old' school here, that I agree. I'm donning my flak jacket now before all the RWD dyslexics pile on!

My brother mixes up 'as' and 'has' so he got labelled 'dyslexic'. Well that's just being thick!

Same with all these 'conditions' that have sprung up in the last few years, like Aspergers Syndrome, Attention Deficiency Disorder or whatever it is, seems these start to acquire names becuase life here is too easy, I don't see people with these conditions in FSU, where life is mostly a daily struggle.

Could it be that dyslexia doesn't really exist in Russia (I know, bold statement!) because for the most part language and grammar is learnt by wrote like it was for me in 60's here in UK and not by stupid modern flavour of the month methods like ITA?

Indeed, one mother was telling me her child is being taught by a another crazy method, the most stupid one I've come across yet! She's taught for example to learn letter 'T' by repeating t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t like a stuck record while turning her head from side to side like watch Tennis. T-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t for Tennis, get it? Fukin idiotic! Same for other letters, these kids are going to end up stammering and stuttering and look like mental cases.

Anyway, any comments, especially re:  FSU attitude to dyslexia and such 'conditions'?

We have all what you have there in the West - dyslexia as well There are special methods to teach such pupils to write and if a problem was caught early then there is a hope for good results ( but just a laptop, and a dictaphone  are not a solution)
But in many cases parents refuse to admit there is some problem and don't take their kids to specialists preferring just to use to their bad grades
But dyslexia IS a diagnose and it has it's own signs - but not just too many mistakes because somebody is lazy to learn proper spelling

( though truth tell I never met anybody who had such diagnose here - just saw a TV programm)

My daughter had it - after 5 years of fighting the school system, they admitted it, and began corrective lessons.  Took another 4 years or so for her brain to get rewired so that its no longer a problem.

I'm mildly dyslexic - but I'm told thats actually fairly common for ambidexterous people.  I know it, but still find myself surprised when I spell a work wrong and stare at it for minutes before realizing I have two letters switched.  *laugh* - just did it twice typing this "before" came out "beofre" and "laugh" came out "luagh" - caught those quickly.  When I "sense" something isn't quite right, I've just taught myself to focus on each letter individually, and not try to look at the word.

We found out that my son had dislexia in the 2d grade. 1/2 year additional classes helped him. It was in Russia. Now he knows 2 languages, no signs of dislexia. :D
P.S. Do they give laptops in the US? Maybe he needs to fake it?
