I have a question for the RW Ladies......Why Not Cold Drinks?
« on: October 25, 2012, 04:30:16 PM »
It is something that is only very minor... but I'm sure there is something that I am missing.
Why will a RW not enjoy a cold drink. Whether it is juice, soda, or even water.  In New York when we were leaving the Empire State Building I asked her if she wanted something to drink.....I know she does not like cold drinks... but I thought at the time she would take one...but she said only if it is not cold.  I had to climb a barrier to get a bottle of water on display to get her one that was not cold. It was very similar in Jamaica. She would try a drink for taste but that was it.
I asked her if she wanted something here that she wanted to drink. She will be here this weekend and she told me to take something out of the refrigerator  before she gets here. We agreed on having green tea for her and maybe a bottle of wine..of course ..warm. It is not important at all but I just don't understand it.

There is a believe that it causes cold throat. And it does until one get used to it. If you live in a hot climate area she will eventually be drinking ice cold drinks.

She also might have sensitive teeth.

Or just do not like her drinks cold for no particular reason.  :)

There are shortcuts to happiness and dancing is one of them.

I do resent the fact that most people never question or think for themselves. I don't want to be normal. I just want to find some other people that are odd in the same ways that I am. OP.

It might only be YOUR lady.  I can't recall striking that particular one - in 30 degrees plus in Sochi the lady I was with was very happy to help me sink litres of cold soft drink!

And WARM wine?  I don't drink, but I know that red wine is supposed to be drunk at room temperature and white wine is supposed to be chilled.  I thought that mulled wine was the only one to be warmed up?

Thank you for the response Renetka. I have never heard of cold throat..but I suppose that would be expected. Maybe on our trip we will talk about that also. Like I said it is not important just curious.

My wife also avoided cold beverages of all types. In the past 10 years or so she has come to appreciate a cold one on a hot day. But way back when her reluctance was for health reasons - yeah, the throat was a major concern.

In contrast, I caught her and my stepdaughter eating raw bacon right from the package on one occasion.

Since our very tender ages, we were told to avoid cold drinks with explanation that the cold may cause us fever. Parents and grandparents were especially eager and persistent at this, often even emotional depending on their personality.
At the moment I cannot think of an exception from this rule. I believe that a number of adult Russians are still able to hear their Mom or Granny screaming out loud something like, ''Put it right back! Don't ever drink the cold stuff! Let Momma warm it first!'.
It is probably a kind of a national phoebia along with the moving air alerts, etc :)

It still persists today.  Larissa took the orange juice out of refrigerator and warmed it in the microwave before giving it to her daughter.

Another new one on me.... you are not supposed to sit on the bed wearing your street clothes.  Pajamas or a robe are o.k.

I have been well trained to order cocktails with only one or two ice cubes.  :D

And I watch Russians every day take milk from the fridge, pour it into a cup and then microwave it.

It is probably a kind of a national phoebia along with the moving air alerts, etc :)

That's another one.  I have been informed frequently that moving air, especially from an air conditioner vent, can kill.  God forbid that I would ever open two windows in the same room and establish a cross draft.

I attempted to discuss the scientific basis of these medical theories.  However, I gave up.

The same people who do not drink cocktails with ice cubes or who avoid moving air indoors, will heat their body in a banya and then immerse themselves in cold water.  Go figure.

Not many people actually practice this sport of banya and icecold winter diving. I for one never met any of them in person. Those who do, apparently went through a longtime training with gradient increase of contrasting temperatures.

I think they all do.
The kiosks all over the place are not refrigerated and I watch people drink beer as soon as they buy it.

I had assumed the lack of refrigerated beverages was because there are still a lack of refrigerators in many homes.  In fact, Irina did not have one in her home until I bought one for her last year.  All of the beverages are left on shelves in the kitchen.  Food is taken to the cellar overnight.  Even at Larissa's place where there is a refrigerator, the drinks are left out of it.   Maybe it is a case of getting used to it that way and just not needing to change.

I have been with many who go straight from the banya to go roll in the snow. As far as I can tell they practiced a gradiant increase of vodka.  :o

Well actually the FSU people are quite a bit correct in these regards.

Why are we told to drink warm tea and such when we have colds and sore throats?  Because the warmth is soothing.  And the obverse . . . cold . . . can lead to irritation.  True, a cold drink does not always lead to irritation and, in fact, it may only rarely do so; but during the cold season, it makes a lot of sense to avoid cold drinks and use warm ones.

And moving air, whether cold or not, can cause irritation problems to throat, nasal passages, etc.  Part of it can be due to allergens in the air when the duct systems are not clean, and part of it can be due to the cold air itself.  I virtually always experience sore throat problems when staying in hotel rooms that have air moving constantly from the vents.

I don't have these air movement problems in houses with clean systems and where the vents are not as close by as  in hotel rooms.

I also can have problems when cool air is blowing through windows; especially if my feet get chilled in the process.

So while the FSU folks may take some of this to extremes, and may not differentiate between the times in which cold drinks and cold blowing air is harmful/harmless . . . they are actually on to something.

Strange though that there are little refrigerators filled with beer and colas in every market, large and small or dotting the sidewalks.  Many buy the beverages and consume immediately while walking along the streets.  Buy a cold brew, pop it open and keep walking.  Everyone does it,  and since we're talking about inside Ukraine and Russia, I would imagine that there is probably a slight majority of locals partaking of the Cold Brew Nectar.  But that's just a hunch...  It seems there is a Beverage Temperature Paradigm Shift currently in progress...

I cannot speak for all women, but I can tell about my reasons for not liking cold drinks, since I also fall into the category of "no-cold-drinkers".

1) I am slim, don't have much of "natural insulation" and hence I am often cold. Having a cold drink makes me "cold inside and outside," freeze even more, so I may even start shaking. Most of "inside" public spaces - offices, restaurants, museums, etc - are cooled-down based on maximum occupancy, whereas usually they aren't fully occupied. Which means the temperature inside is much lower than what is a normal/comfortable temperature for a person. For a tender person like myself - it can feel really cold inside. Having a hot drink may help to warm up, whereas having a cold drink will make the situation even worse for me.

2)  I have somewhat of a sensitive stomach. Eating fried food or eating cold food and drinking cold drinks makes my stomach hurt, sometimes seriously. Therefore, if I eat - I always try to have warm dish (ideally a soup) and a warm/hot drink. This makes me relaxed and happy.

3) Finally, we have a culture of drinking tea, and we do not really have a culture of drinking iced drinks (at least not in my generation). Hence, having a tea is always my choice over having the cold drink.

4) Most of "iced drinks" are not good for you - they contain color additives, acids, are carbonated, have either sugar (contribute to weight gain) or sugar substitutes (are carcinogenes). I generally dislike most of sodas. Would not drink them cold or warm, plus when warm - their taste is particularly disgusting.

5) As for red wines - google says that "Ideal range of temperature for storing red wine is 50-55ºF or 10-16ºC" - so basically it's a little warmer than what you get if you store it in your refrigerator. I tend to agree, that the refrigerated red wine is far less fragrant and flavorful than "room temperature." I do not cool down my red wine, only whites.

6) Drinking iced drink on a hot day is a risk of cold/sore throat, plus it has been empirically proven that having warm/hot drink makes you/me less thirsty on a hot day, than the cold drink does.

7) I always order drinks "without ice" even if they are meant to be chilled, just because I don't like the drink to be diluted with water. For example, if I order Thai chai, and they bring it with ice - after I remove the ice the glass is barely 1/3 full. If I ask to bring me tea without ice - it is still very cold, but it isn't diluted, and tastes much better, plus I feel that this way I'm paying for the product and not for tap water, i get more for my money.

There are 2 cold drinks that I LOVE: thai tea, and horchata.

As a matter of fact many RW will get a sore throat after a single cold drink. She may walk in a miniskirt at icy streets, have a cold shower bath but a glass of freezed drink knock her down.  The throat is her Achilles' heel that takes roots  from childhood, or to be accurate, the style the russian mothers raise kids. Though I know one exception when even RW do not require the drink to be warmed. Because a shot is small in volume anyway.

I'm not particularly interested in the rolls - I want to do some scientific research with the young lady relating to drinks of various temperatures!  :devilish:
