OK - I have edited your post to remove the personal data, yet retain enough so that if someone else is involved, they may recognize her.

However, it is NOT appropriate to come onto a board and make a baseless accusation with no substantiation.

The fact that you were left "devastated" - while sad, is hardly a basis for claiming "scam" - and could result from any number of reasons - not all of them the woman's fault.

In other words - you have sent an alert, and others can read it - but until you provide some substantiation, there is NOTHING to cry foul about and nothing that brands this young woman a "scammer" - at least, not in my thinking - yet.

This girl said she was from Vitebsk  but all her emails originated in Minsk.  Her excuse for our not meeting was that she had received an opportunity to study in St Petersburg in a very "prestegious accelerated English program" and since she was a teacher and this was such a high honor to be accepted she didn't want to pass it up, plus "it will help me when I come there to be with you" should she decide she wanted to teach here.

Based on her descriptions of the program and of the "fellow students" as well as other scarce details she gave about the school, I researched all the major English programs in major universities in St. Petersburg. I then narrowed the field down to five schools with "renowned" reprutations for such studies and contacted every one.  She was not enrolled in any of the schools!

There is more to the story.... but let's just say the cost of this whole thing is more than I can bear on many levels.

Caveat Emptor

I am sure we will all be looking forward to the details.  Of course there is a rule that you should never send money to a gal you have never met.  I have a feeling you forgot to read that one.   Having been through my share of bad experiences I feel bad for you.  Do share the details when you can.

Hmmm... i have some experience with IP control... and for little country little Belarus, it can happen that the IP from one provider cover all the country...

In one case, i was with a women from Moscow where the IP lead to London... the reason was very simple... She was working in a international bank in Moscow and use the netwerk of the bank... Since the main office was in London, all the interne web traffic was via a server in London...

Be suspicious is good, be parano is wrong... in anycase, if these girls go to St Peterburg, and you continue to write each other, you can check again the IP... if it is coming from Russia, specially St Peterburg, maybe her story is true... and in place of make some research about school, certainly using english search engine in place of russian one, why not simply ask her the name of the school ?

I am not making any judgements till I hear the whole story.   I am guessing she really took advantage of you but I can see some concerns on the other side where you have researched the school records of every school looking for her too.   I have had a lot of bad experiences myself but playing bloodhound that much is not something I would do.  We are looking forward to your story.

My wife is presently in Minsk and was a former English teacher.  Here story of going to St. Petersburg strikes me as very suspicious, but, if you like, I could ask around.

that would be great!  I know that there IS an Elena Belyakova teaching in Vitebsk.  My suspicion is that they did a little research to throw off any cursory inquiries.  There was a cell phone number (no longer in service) and I have the names of two people in Minsk who were supposedly "immigration advisors" who were the recipients of my wire transfers (suposedly because government representatives do not have to pay taxes for monies received from out of the country)  I can email you the names if she wouldn't mind looking them up.  (I also have the address of the place where they picked the money up in Minsk).  As for the Programs in St. Petersburg, I will send you all my research regarding the programs i researched as well as the correspondence she sent to me.

That would be great if she would look into any of these matters for me.!

Thanks,

Rob

Rob,

A simple Google search led me to a discussion on Genealogy.com.

http://genforum.genealogy.com/belarus/messages/1597.html

I hope it is not similar to your story, but given your first posts it looks like it.

I agree with Bruno about the IP, someone in Vitebsk could connect to a provider in Minsk.
No it is not a dog. Its really how I look.  ;)
