I always stay awake the night before a trip.  It allows me to sleep on the plane and arrive somewhat well adjusted.

Gator, 'Off like a dirty shirt' is a phrase I learned very young.  It means that you're revving the engine and getting out the door.  The analogy comes from the desire to quickly peel off a shirt when you walk in the door and it's all sweaty - like you just played 36 holes - and you want to plunge into the shower.

I know we've talked about this on different threads, but the most important thing for me to take on the plane is a pair of bedroom slippers.  I also always have with me some Xanex in the event that I want to drug myself out a bit.  I also carry a pencil with me on the plane.  I tap the eraser on my head and count from ten backwards if I am feeling closed in.  Haven't had to do it for years, but I know that the trick works.

I never drink coffee on a plane and always drink plenty of water.  Once I arrive at my destination - then I drink coffee.

Me too. I have outlasted the bourbon on many different flights and switched to something else. Nothing helps me sleep on a plane in flight. I've done the heavy narcotic, nerve, sleeping pills, you name it. An occasional 3 minute nod is the best I can get

I can get 2-3 hours of sleep which is all I need to recharge my batteries.  I rely on a sleeping pill and one glass of red wine.  Any more alcohol and I become dehydrated - not good on flights.  Walk the aisles a lot before falling asleep.
 
The worst part was arriving at SVO in the winter.  It has improved since 2002 with shorter passport control lines and hot water in the toilets.  Nothing was worse than trying to shave with frigid water in a time zone, redeye, stupor.
