No, walking in socks is Ok, I like it too. But host must offer slippers as a matter of courtesy.

I would have thought that walking in socks could actually be quite dangerous on a polished floor!  The only problem I had on my first visit to Russia was that all the slippers in my friend's apartment were too small for me, and my feet are only size 10 (size 11 US).  I had brought my own slippers on the trip, but of course they were in my apartment, not hers.

I seldom wear jeans but that is just me.
+1. I find them too cold in winter and too warm in the summer - only good for mid-seasons, which have been disappearing of late :-\.

Sandro, jeans come in various weights/thickness.

I have some very heavy ones and some very thin ones.

You're right, but they tend to be rather stiff in my experience. Over these many years I've come to favour trousers in pure new wool, and its summer variant, called fresco lana here, is more pliable and very light, I think because their fabric threads are thinner than in cotton ;).

Anyway, given the chance one must help those poor sheep farmers down-under :D.

Considering the whole of the North Island has officially been declared to be in drought that is a very noble sentiment  :P , and we appreciate your kind thoughts.  Seriously, this is the first time this has happened in our history.  There have been (I think) four days with proper rain in Auckland this year, which have produced about 5% of our usual rainfall, and there has been a total fire ban in force for a month.
Seeing calmissile's photos, I'm sure that some of the people in Kyiv would quite happily swap places at the moment.

I was talking only about the jeans; not what's in them.

As for jeans and for brands.. Of course, it depends on a "society" ( company ) which you are going to visit and where you want to find your girl. If you want to get a girl of such "majors" society ( "мажоры" as people call them here ) - people who have everything, being kids of some "great and hard-boiled" owner of banks, all kinds of business, politicians, deputies etc ( I believe you have got my idea ) - then "yes", you should be careful, choosing a brand :) But, believe me, such a girl will never go with you abroad, to the USA as a bride. Firstly, she lives here having everything. ( Even our Laws work for them etc ). Secondly, no parents allow her to go with you as they need someone to keep their business when they decide to rest or if she is an owner of a good business, so she will want to get someone who is not a "simple guy". So, let's stop on the jeans that ordinary men wear in Ukraine. If you are going to come here in summer, it should be a light-blue jeans ( like those jeans I had put here before - by the way, your favorite Levi's 506 ), plus-minus a tint. But, if you don't want to look older, don't wear too baggy ones. Not as tight as Blue oyster's visitors wear, but not the size to put someone ( or something ) else inside. If you go somewhere on evening, you could wear even black ones. With a t-shirt ( or shirt ) that suits it you will look as a stylish guy :) The jackets made of such a fabric are not popular here now. I have forgotten! It shouldn't have a high "waist". It may, of course, but... Wear such jeans with a suitable t-shirt or light shirt and you will look like a 100-percents Ukrainian young guy :) Just to let you know, such jeans here will cost about 50$ for cheapest and higher ( I mean even not any famous brands ( anyway all famous brand models - as Ostap Bender had said ( everyone here knows this literature personage and this phrase) - are made on the Malaya Arnautskaya street in Odessa -if you, by the way, use this phrase, you will impress your girl! ). I hope, I have given you some advices. You can ask me everything :)

By the way, these last ones have a suitable "waist"

Oh, yeah! But only if someone wants to look like a clown here  ;D

Londrake, never wear these ones, unless you want to attract people attention being pointed with their fingers  :D

Londrake, pay your attention for the last ones that I have uploded. I had been thinking more and thought it would be the best ones, and with such a white t-shirt.

From you photos, I gather that these jeans do not have permanent creases in the pant legs?

I ask this because my gal in Ukraine told me that jeans with a crease in the pant legs is a sure giveaway that you are an American.

If you mean crease on the bat ( bum ) ( if it is a correct word for upper part of the pant legs ) - then "No" !! Just some little one, not like a hippopotamus bum :)) But right over the shoes - yes, it might be.

Yeah! If you wear like these ones, you will look like an American guy maybe :)

That's funny. There's nothing sillier than an American being thought of as an American, doesn't it?   :P

I'm chuckling because the thread would have the same flavor had it been about a Japanese man asking an American what sushi is all about? The things you read in the internet can sometimes be pretty wild.

Besides....I look great in jeans....and they make me look at least 15 years younger
lonedrake, I don't know how old you are, but jeans themselves don't make people look younger, but they do make older guys look like they are trying to look younger.  ;D

Don't get absolutely plain American jeans, like old men wear, they look cheap and boring. The jeans shouldn't be skinny or tight, but also not baggy (this looks sloppy and "disorganized"), something in the middle. Also remember that Russians wear longer jeans and pants than most Americans do, the length should be about 2-3 cm covering the upper part of the shoe and not longer than 1 cm above the floor. I don't think the brand is important, the quality is.

I dare to disagree with some statements :) Jeans really make a man looking younger, that's fact :) Of course, everything should have a measure ;) And it should suit other things ( t-shirt, shoes etc ) I wear wide jeans, too, and it looks not bad with a wide "jacket". And I am not alone wearing it ( I mean, it is not just I, who wear such ones )
As for length, yes, they shouldn't be short. And it would be nice if it had some creases above the shoes. And yes, about 1 cm above the floor. The way I do it - It should reach the floor when I am without any shoes. With shoes it will be that 1 cm above the floor and some creases above the shoes :)
