Russian hotels may face poor service fines

Guests at Russian hotels could be entitled to legal recourse should a stay not live up to expectations under new proposals being considered by the country’s government. Russian hotels could be legally obliged to compensate for poor service.

The proposed new law would require hoteliers to correct a problem within an hour of a complaint being made, offer a discount for poor service, or compensate for losses if the problem remains unresolved and a guest opts to relocate.

The proposals would also see hotel guests have access to legal recourse, as an official complaint to the Russian government could then result in a hotel being fined for its poor service. Hotels would also be responsible for any property left behind by a disgruntled guest and this should be kept safe for a minimum of six months. The Russian Ministry of Culture has drafted the proposed law with the aim of protecting the rights of the consumer.

Russia would be one of the first countries to impose a national mandate on service levels in the hotel industry should the law be passed. In recent years, hotel guests around the world have tended to air their dissatisfaction with service on websites such as TripAdvisor.
