Did you go to the interview
« on: August 02, 2013, 03:13:39 PM »
Given other commitments, and the fact that I plan on being there to escort her here, I am doubtful I can go to the interview as well.

How necessary is it?

Did you go?

Thanks.

Rather than 'send for' you may do well to go and bring.
The interviewer asks lady 'is your fiance with you?'
Adds to morale too.

I didn't go. Yeah there is the moral support aspect and if you have the time and money, it wouldn't hurt a thing in the world to be there. It won't help anything either. It's her interview and your presence won't make any difference in the outcome. There isn't much you can do sitting outside in a chair and it will be conducted in her native language. The K-1 isn't much more than a formality. Once you jump the hurdles to get a scheduled interview, she will get approved unless there is something glaring that indicates fraud.

I wouldn't recommend rescheduling. As FP said, it reallly is not going to make any difference to the K1 if you are there or not. They will ask your fiance if she prefers to do the interview in English, Russian or Ukrainian.

I went. K-1 interviewer was an American man. He asked me a few questions and then told me to have a seat.

The more important interview is when your wife does an interview for adjustment of status for her green card. You must go and both of you will be interviewed separately. I was first and my interview was 30 minutes. Wife's was 5 min. You both will have some of the same questions such as what is the make and model of the car you drive. Some people will be asked when is the last time they had sex. Just have sex the night before the interview so the answer will be fresh in both your memories.
Fund the audits, spread the word and educate people, write your politicians and other elected officials. Stay active in the fight to save our country. Over 220 generals and admirals say we are in a fight for our survival like no other time since 1776.

She was nervous and it helped that. Yes I went because it was the Detroit office.

Everyone is assuming that the OP is asking about at K-1 visa interview at the US Embassy in Kyiv. Then, others are talking about an adjustment of status interview in the USA.

The US Embassy in Kyiv allows the US citizen to enter the embassy with their fiancee, and would be asked some questions, also. The room where all of this takes place is not very large, and you would be able to hear what questions are being asked and answered.

If you speak English, they will want to interview you in English. Otherwise, they might want to know how the two you you can communicate with each other? Like, do you speak Russian?

My experience at the AOS interview in Detroit:

Questions asked of me:   zero

Questions asked of her:  only the questions on the printed form that you filled out for the petition.

Get this!  She could not understand the Mexican woman's English, so our 16 year old exchange student from Ukraine translated.

I didn't go to my wife's interview in Moscow. A huge part of me wanted to but she assured me she'll be fine despite being very nervous about it. Luckily, Popski accompanied her in Moscow for the duration.

That was a good decision too because after she got her visa, I went out on the limb and decided how wonderful it would be if her entire family can actually get their (tourist) visas and be in attendance in our wedding. So shortly after that, Popski and Mumski flew back to Moscow for their respective interviews. By then, Popski was already a pro and knew exactly what to do.

Win-win.

On a different note, I vaguely remember when I was still hack home and went to 'my' interview, IINM, I went to my medical and my interview alone. As a little boy. I even flew alone too to San Francisco where my family awaited for my arrival. My first plane ride ever, let alone an international flight. I had 2 lay-overs, Korea & Anchorage. Never got lost nor even felt lost. All I remember was being so bored to death and the airline food were like a royalty treat for me.

I didn't think it was a big deal then, nor do I believe it to be so today.

At the AOS...the couple's presence is mandatory.

At the visa interview, the State Dept officer will ask the lady to speak a certain amount of English conversation.
I remember this when I was present at the K-1 interview.

What question are you answering?

She can't go to Detroit for K-1 since she is in Ukraine.

And didn't you go to AOS in Detroit because it was required; so you really had no option?

USCIS office in Detroit is on Mt Elliot, near the Detroit river, in an extremely run down part of a banrupt city. They do have a fensed in parking area--but you are really taking your life in your own hands in going there.

There are a lot of empty or burned down buildings. You certainly would not want to be there when it is dark outside.

Yes, at the AOS interview, the spouse must attend. However, as I already pointed out, this office of USCIS does not ask a lot of questions. Of course, it depends upon if you completed all the paper work properly in the first place.

A K-1 or any other visa interview at the US Embassy in Kyiv is an entirely difference matter. I don't see that the OP has given enough information to know what he is asking about?

Don't different embassies have different rules ?   As I understand it, in Moscow they won't even allow you in the building.

If you are a US citizen who petitioned for a Russian citizen K-1 visa, yes you can wait outside the embassy, but not go inside with your Fiancee. That is in Moscow!

This OP is involved with Kyiv! Different embassies/different rules!

Of course, if you are a US citizen with an appointment at the US Embassy in Moscow for some other matter, you can go in! You can even seek refuge there! Remember, the land the embassy is built on belongs to USA--not Russia!

From the US Embassy, Moscow website:

Please note that no one may accompany applicants into the Embassy's visa waiting room. This includes American citizens, spouses, attorneys, sponsors, friends, and family members.

Wayne, you are contradicting yourself.

Your last post says "can't go in visa waiting room."

Your previous post says "wait outside the Embassy."

Two very different concepts.

Her interview was in Warsaw. We flew from Kyiv to Warsaw and spent a couple of days sight-seeing. I walked with her to the interview and there were two immediate benefits I can tell by doing that.

1) Moral support. She was a bundle of nerves.
2) Me carrying a US Passport allowed for a nicer treatment to her. I saw quite a few ladies outside the gate in tears because lack of communications with the guard.

I walked with her to the window for her interview and the lady behind the glass very politely instructed me to have a seat and be comfortable. The issue was between them. Five minutes later Ira tells me she has to come back in the afternoon to get her passport back.

The rest of the stay was very nice.

Paul, what country is your wife from, and what embassy location?

Yes, the rules and procedures are different at various US embassies.

What happened to the OP?

If you go back more than 10 years ago, Ukraine citizens needed to go to the US embassy in Warsaw, Poland for all K type visas. Then, you went to the visa interview in the morning and came back in the afternoon of the same day to pick up your passport with visa attached. They did not require any permission from the absent parent of a minor child. A lot of US men went to Warsaw to meet their fiancee, buy airplane tickets, and not return to Ukraine. It was really easy to get a visa then!

OK, Muzh posted while I was posting. His experience matches what I said about Warsaw.

Back then, Ukrainian citizens did not need any kind of visa to enter Poland. You could fly in, take a train, car or whatever.

It was very much easier to get a K visa then for Ukrainians. Of course, you see very many Polish people traveling to USA without any problems. LOT has daily, direct flights Warsaw/Chicago.

If at all possible, I would recommend going to be with your fiancee for the interview.

In Moscow only, the American citizen cannot enter into the embassy grounds for a Russian citizen visa interview. Not even a Russian attorney can enter with their client. They have a separate entrance for these visa interviews.
