Alyson Hannigan is a fine example of what an *average American gal* looks like...

Now, baked and armed for a photo-shoot, Alyson looks like as shown below.

A variation of that joke (my attempt to translate it from Russian)

Dialog between a male boss and his female subordinate:

"Olga, if you fail to meet our quarterly targets next time, you will be ravished right in this office!'

"Come on, Ivan Ivanovich, it has been years since I heard these promises from you''.

I had a variation of this joke told to me by a RW living in America. She would tell this to Russians who thought it was quite hilarious. The Americans she told it to would be stunned and didn't know what to say.

Two RW are sitting on a bench. Another RW walks by. One RW sitting on the bench says to the other:

"She is so lucky!"

"Why is she lucky?" says the other.

"Because she is married, has a lover and was raped last night!"

I would say someone like Kelly Clarkson is your average American gal in terms of looks. Raised on KFC and McDees. Or Ginnefer Goodwin.  Average American gals dress up gorgeous with a dress and make up.

The kind of looks that would be the friend of the female lead or perhaps even the lead in another movie.

Those two pictures of Alyson are remarkable for her.

hahaha I just saw the poll. I was more interested in reading her article.

okay maybe I'm being a little prude but to have a poll about her looks...come on...we're better than that.

I'm not blameless too since I made a comment on her looks.

So it's ok to have a back and forth discussion about her looks (one you were an early participant in. see reply #19 above) but somehow a forum poll on the question is out of bounds?

the article is interesting though flawed on a number of areas.  If her boyfriend is going to let her freeze in the cold then it's not because he's American it's because he's an idiot who doesn't care so you can't say it's an American thing to be indifferent. And I've seen plenty of fights in clubs because some guy just happens to eye ball another guy's girl so that kind of stupid proprietorship is not owned exclusivly by Russian, Italien of Spanish men. It's owned by all stupid men.

She can't really talk about Russian men as if she were objective in her dealings with them. She is American and all the good and bad that promises with it goes into the dynamic when she is with a Russian boyfriend....

Her experience is likely painted by the fact in Russia, she's on top of the food chain. While in the US, notably Manhattan of all places, she hardly registers a glance. I can't for the life of me envision an upwardly mobile Manhattan-nites giving her a second look, much less 'fight' over her. The fact she grew up in the US (with a US passport), as many of the bride-seekers experienced during the economic mayhem, could have added to her being 'rock star' in Russia. It means doodley squat in the US obviously as is the case, vis-a-vis.

Quote
...And come on 3-1 female to male gender? She really lost credibility when she came up with that number. i assure it's not even 2-1...

Yeppers. I thought the wagon had gone far beyond us all but apparently it hasn't left for some.

Kelly Clarkson is a good call. Average looking to me is not 'ugly' but hardly attractive. But bake the shell some, then they (may) come out oven fresh and hot to the touch. For some more than others.

I thought the article was funny but off base in the comparison between American and Russian men.

Off base in observations about Russian men or about American men?

The poll has been removed and will remain that way. We would like to think the membership of RWD would be well above such a subjective poll. Remember we are grown adults. Please refrain in the future from polls of this nature

"The rest of the tale is told!"

In case you missed it what that imply is, our opinions are shaped by our personal experience. In this case, your standard of attractiveness is confined by your total personal exposure to attractive women. If you haven't had a lot of exposure/experience being around beautiful women, the chances of *believing* an average looking woman to be attractive increases dramatically.

She's an average looking woman. Not ugly, but definitely not attractive.

I was standing on a dirt path in a Russian country village, holding my boyfriend Anton’s torn, bloodstained T-shirt. All that could be heard in the darkness was my friends and I shouting his name, and the thuds and grunts of Anton wrestling with another guy. Only a few minutes ago, we’d been standing together drinking beer

I take it she wasn't dating PhD students or poets in Russia >:D  From what I gather, the article has little to do with Russian versus American men, rather the freedom to date men her friends and family wouldn't approve of back home in NYC because they were of the wrong social class.

I think what she's reallly doing is echoing Bono - She really has found what she's looking for. She's looking for an enlightened Russian-American man.

Well, like I said, if that was what it was all about then she had a multitude of choices here.

a) Detroit,
b) East side NY,
c) East LA,
d) Trailer park, USA
d) heck, even become a biker chick...

...and considering her association with 'business' minded Russian men, she could've likely made a good gansta master squiz for MS13 and other gangbangers around.

+1

Several of her conclusions and assumptions might be very different had she grown up and experienced life in Russia.

She is attractive in a general sense but not overly so to my eyes. Yet I don't sense that any of us would discard her as a human being because some didn't find her to be beautiful.

I agree with several ideas expressed here, starting with the idea that at home she is average and in Russia she is also average but living a fantasy on several different levels while holding a US passport, meaning that she is a commodity in Russia but can go home anytime the fantasy ends.

She misread the guys in her story about the men walking her home--they already knew what she wanted and the question wasn't if one would walk her home, but which one would get lucky.

She could be painted blue and have 5 nipples for all I care.  I got my bread buttered somehwere else.  So unless you post your own picture side by side against her, can we cut with the snarky sexist slights against her looks?  She is a writer expreasing her ideas not  a fake celebrity with a reality TV show.

Also attacking or even critiquing a man on her looks is the lowest thing you can do to a woman.  Save those kind of insults for the First Lady or for the firat boyfriend - Rwggie Lo

She was born in 88.  Twenty five years old.  She has a lot of things wrong.  Most of us do in out twenties.  But she gets it mostly right.  Some people on this thread have alluded to jer being a slut.  She is no Mother Theresa, but no one hear is and furthermore some are.loudly claiming to be otherwise.  So stop with the NS double standards.  Whatever the condition of jer soul, she knows what she wants in between knees and thats a real man ~ a man who fights for what he believes in and is not going to roll over because the herd is moving in anothet direction.  She observes the cultural fault lines on what is masculine and femine the lines of cleavage between values of Russia and America and all some of you are obsessing about is her cleavag

I doubt it. She cares enough to specify the name of her colleges, one of the top-25 in the USA where tuition costs over $50k per year and she mentions that she wonders what her women's studies professor would think of  her choices. Lot of hints being dropped as to her status, yet the goal of the article seems to be to explain how someone who graduated from a top-ranked colleges with a degree in women's studies could be dating men in Russian villages who get into drunken brawls ;) Nothing wrong with that, but as GQ writes, it would have been easy enough for her to find the closest hangout for the local biker gang and experience something comparable. However, doing it in Russia, she chooses when she can leave and she knows the odds are quite good that the boyfriend will never show up at her doorstep  >:D

Yes, and generally, if anything, there are more young men in villages than young women. Most young women in Russian villages do all they can to leave and not come back, while some young men must stay behind to help parents and so forth. As a young woman going to a village, it would not be that hard to find many men to date. It would comparable to single young woman going up to the oil fields of Alaska  :o

Holy smokes! Nowhere in the article mentioned her as being a lesbian, let alone a transvestite. Are you on meds or do you really lack the ability to make sense, pinoy?

Well I beg to differ. Maybe being proud of one's higher institute of learning is an American trait. I'm relatively proud of mine. She splattered this segment of her love life out in the open public. I didn't read it that, she did that to impress anyone. It was a good piece and it had some wonderful insight of a 25 year old AW with RW's background mind. Well worth the read IMO. Yes, she is obviously from the higher end socio-economic class but, it was also part of the story.

C'mon Misha, quit reading what you want to be there and instead, read whats there.  Sure she could have went to the local biker bar or redneck joint and got the same juices flowing that she did with the ruffians in Russia. But then, it wouldn't have been that much of a read, especially here. Would it?

FP-

That being the case then, her article is rubbish for the simple reason she made a specific distinction between two cultures, bar none, considering she lacks the total experience or full exposure of both. There are just as many Alpha males in the US that would dirty her stockings black and make her fetch a cold one after, as there likely are in Russia.

There are barrios/hood (hispanic communities/ghettos) in the US that would not only brawl for their white meat, but would do serious drive-bys if you mess with their main flygirl. How's that any different than dating in Russia?

And if none, how's her blog article insightful?

This flies in the face of MOBers excuse that all AWs are fat. It would be factual AND insightful if these posters/authors would specifically state - *based on my personal very limited experience/exposure and what's available for me to date* - but none of that appears in the article.
