Can't buy anything like that in Singapore, might end up with 25 min long movie due to censorship...    :-\

I saw the movie when it was first released, 5-6 years ago.  It flew under the radar as it received little publicity.  Most people opted not to view it upon learning that it featured a relationship with a life-size  sex doll.

Upon the advice of a wacky friend, I went.  I enjoyed it.  What touched me was how all of his small town neighbors compassionately played along with Lars' delusion.   The review video clip in Mendy's post above is insightful and on target.

I can see Daveman's reference to the MOB theme because the central character is socially eccentric and withdrawn, and he turns to the extreme act of purchasing a sex doll not for sex but for companionship.

The film received decent marks, yet it and Gosling should have received a higher rating for making a bizarre concept work.  In lesser hands it easily could have sunk to a silly comedy for teenagers instead of a story about the fragility of the human mind. Roger Ebert wrote:

Quote
The film wisely never goes for even one moment that could be interpreted as
smutty or mocking. There are so many ways [it] could have gone wrong that one of
the film's fascinations is how adroitly it sidesteps them. Its weapon is
absolute sincerity. It has a kind of purity to it.

Gator, wasn't there a movie several years back about two brothers who went to the FSU on a marriage tour? I think that they lived on a farm in the Midwest and were looking for housewife to do the chores, etc.

Does anyone recall that film?

No FP, the title was "2 brothers and a Bride".

It's actually a good movie. Free on HULU, too.

HULU doesn't work outside of US, unfortunately.   But from the snippets it does look like a good movie with couple of actors whom I like.

Has the title of the film changed?  It was released as "A Foreign Affair" and still being marketed under that title.

Because of the MOB angle, an independent critic would probably think it more absurd than "Lars and the Real Girl."   If not already involved with dating RW, I would have given the film

Nevertheless, the following made the film interesting if not amusing:  scenes with real Russian people, the socials, the comments of real MOB RW, one brother quickly sorting through the profiles of hundreds of RW, the queuing of RW to be interviewed by one brother for marriage, the background shots of St. Piter, the AFA tour director absurdly asking how many men got engaged during the one-week tour, the one brother spending all of their money on a "good time girl," etc.   Does anyone belive a newly arrived RW in America would clean and cook a pet gold fish for dinner?

The best scene IMO was the  one brother meeting the papa of a dyev he wanted to marry.  It started with papa giving a harsh look to the brother extending his hand across the door threshold, and it ended when papa kicking them out when he learned two brothers wanted his daughter.

Does anyone find it improbable that Emily Mortimer has a leading role in both films, Lars' supportive sister-in-law and a journalist reporting on the absurdity of the MOB methods?

Now for something even more improbable.  Emily's lines in Russian were her voice and not dubbed.   She is British and a graduate of Oxford University where she studied Russian.  She then spent two terms at the Moscow Arts Theater Drama School.  Smart woman!

It is also out there under the title  "Two Brothers and a Bride".   Actually I have seen more of it under the later title than the AFA title.  It has been broadcast on some channel networks.

Sorry 'bout that Ooopppss..can you steam Netflix from where you are? I think if you can go via VPN, you may be able to work around this...

Anywho...for those interested, here's the full length version through HULU.
