Imprisoned Pussy Riot band members released

(CNN) -- Two members of Russian punk band Pussy Riot, who were serving a two-year jail term for their part in a performance critical of Russian President Vladimir Putin, have been released from prison.
Maria Alyokhina and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova were released about two months before their prison sentences were due to end. The release was approved last week when Russian lawmakers backed a sweeping amnesty law announced by Putin.

Why is Putin threatened by these women?  He seems to take a perverse preoccupation with hurting women who disagree with him.

Masha Gessen is a prominent journalist who is also a lesbian and an outspoken LGBT rights advocate in Russia. After Russia passed two anti-gay laws in June, she decided it was time for her, her partner and their children to leave. In late December, they moved to New York.

In the light of what is written around here it seems pretty interesting that a lesvian journalist writing a critical book about Putin was not put to prison. What may even be more surprising is a lesbian couple seemingly having zero difficulty moving from Moscow to New York.

I bet there is a number of men who would like to know how a Russian couple managed that within 6 months.

Name names or be quiet.  You have written nothing substantive for or against human rights in Russia.  I am not a gay lover but I do think people should enjoy civil rights even when they are not doing anything against me.  Putin makes no logical argument for his persecution other than to score points with a disaffected constituency.  His power can't last.

By the way, I don't agree with pussy riot, their tactics or the type of Russia or civil society they are building except that it is free and they are the only EFFECTIVE opposition against Vladimir Vladimirovich.  Pussy Riot is to Russia what the Ayotollah in Paris was to Iran.  Judgment is coming and the post-Putin Russia will resemble more of their ideas as strange as they are than that of a normal free society.
