My question is - how does one know which of these services are legit?  All?  Some?  Anyone care to comment on experiences (don't know if this is the right area or not)?  Id really be interested, because I would like to do this, I think, once I find "the one" - just to be on the safe side.

Steve, in most cases these services are not legit. The reasons  are following:
1. There is no computerized register, and even the phone book can be wrong. My fiancee's number was listed under 4 names.
2. If a Russian/Ukrainian call to the work of someone and asks if this person works there the answer is NO. Unless the person annonced someone might be calling, no information is given.
3. Russian has strict privacy laws, and even for private detectives there are very strict limits

As such chances are the reports you get are fake.

So then, my next question is...no matter how sure that you may think you are, it appears the only way to really know is to meet with them in person?  I mean, I guess you can do a cheap preliminary "rose with photo" to verify the girl and her address for starters...

One of the things I used with succes was putting her address in Google and Yandex... and then asking her questions about what is in the neighbourhood like stores and churches

Company uses a hotmail address. How do you pay? Western Union. The letter Jack posted from Phillip is like no other for an English speaking person as he says "But she did not have money to road" I guess Phillip's translator made a mistake!
