FSUW views on public displays of affection

Half of Russians Are in Love – Poll

MOSCOW, February 11 (RIA Novosti) – Almost half of Russians are currently in love, although men with romantic feelings outnumber women, according to a new poll released Tuesday. Some 48 percent of Russians admitted to being in love, 4 percent less than in 2011, the survey by the independent Levada Center found.

But, implying some emotional drama, the figure for men stood at 56 percent compared to just 40 percent for women. The poll did not give a gender breakdown for respondents.

A shy 10 percent declined to say whether they were in love, up from 8 percent in 2011, when the question was first polled.

Russians have also grown notably more tolerant of public displays of affection, with 46 percent saying they felt no particular emotions when they see couples making out in public. The figure was 33 percent in 1998.

Some do get hot and bothered by public smooching: 12 percent said that they were outraged by it and 11 percent irritated, while 10 percent were happy to see people kissing in public. The number of Russian irritated by public kissing was 19 percent in 1998, with 16 percent professing outrage. The mix of emotions felt by Russians witnessing a kissing couple also included shame (8 percent), curiosity (6 percent), sadness (4 percent), envy (3 percent) and delight (4 percent).

The poll, held ahead of Valentine’s Day on Friday, covered 1,600 respondents nationwide and had a margin of error of 3.4 percentage points.

The last findings mentioned in the article caused me to think that FSUW's attitudes on public displays of affection might make an interesting thread topic.  I thought this thread might also help guys new to the search avoid a faux pas while they are visiting a FSUW.

The mildest form of a public display of affection is holding hands in public.  I've never known a FSUW who objected to this, provided that the two of you were close.  But the public displays of affection (known in the US by the acronym PDA) the article mentioned were kissing, more than just a greeting kiss, and really making out.  For purposes of discussion let's throw hugging into the mix.

I suspect, based only upon limited observation, that most FSUW have a different attitude toward PDA than most AW do.

What are your observations on FSUW's attitudes toward PDA?  Does doing it embarrass them?  Does observing it annoy them?  Is their feeling on PDA mainly based upon how close the relationship has become?  Do attitudes vary considerably by age?

PDAs among teenagers will always be there and people in general will either brush it off or resent it because they are past their prime for doing it AND would love to do it.

Two adults exchanging body fluids in public will elicit the typical "get a room" followed by a frown.

Also, at certain age, these people should know that the public will be resentful about their displays of affection so they'll probably wait until they "get a room" and go at it. And then again, they may not.

I was once walking with my wife at the Freedom Square park in Kharkiv and we were holding hands. My wife overheard some lady behind us telling her very young daughter to hold her hand. "Look at how nice the couple in front of us are holding hands. Don't you want to do the same?" And the daughter grabbed her mother's hand.

You have Americanized her.  The RW I knew greatly preferred that I extend my elbow so she can rest her arm inside mine, and if things are going well, touch my upper arm with..... :)

That was on my second trip before we got married. On my first trip I dropped everything on the floor at Boryspol, let out a "STOP" at top of my lungs because she took off* and gave her a bear hug.

Ha, Muzh,

I can just imagine you shouting out 'stop' at the airport!

Interestingly, I have been with Eastern European women who have chosen to remain discreet.  No kissing on lips in public, no PDAs.  But, clandestinely, they will make sure that you know they are interested.  One lady I was with took me to a public concert - formal suits, the whole nine yards.  (Rare in Ukraine.)  As we were listening to classical music, she would move my hand to places on her body that traditionally only a husband or lover would have access to.  I found the dichotomy very, um, stimulating.

Ultimately, I found the routine too practiced.  Like a guy who is gaming a woman, she knows that he has done so before.  So did I with her.

Show me a woman who covetously gives of herself whether in public or private and I will be loyal and dedicated beyond all understanding.  I want to be able to shout out at the airport:  "Stop!"

Interesting. I had one RW girlfriend who preferred this rather than hand-holding.  The others were fine with handholding.

You'll know when to do it.  ;D

We do all of the above, hand holding, more often, her holding my arm, hugs in public and yes we have kissed in public, I don't think to the point of us needing a room, but that was me.
Maybe someone else was saying it and I didn't hear, or too busy to care :D
Common sense, Is not so common!
