Vladimir Putin named corrupt person of the year

Investigative group names Vladimir Putin person of the year for corruption and organised crime

A group investigating corruption and organised crime has named Vladimir Putin its person of the year. The group, the Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project, bestowed the Russian president with the dubious distinction for "his work in turning Russia into a major money-laundering center for enabling organized crime in Crimea and in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine."

The group added that Putin has been a finalist several years in a row. Other honourable mentions included Hungarian President Viktor Orban and Montenegrin Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic.

The organisation recognises those who promote and enable organised crime. In addition to enabling money-laundering, the groups recognised Putin for his stifling of media and civil society groups.

It's what is called an extrajudicial killing.

excerpt
Gradually it became clear that the commander Alexander Bednov had indeed been killed, and with him died six militia. Were still unknown the exact cause of violent skirmishes between militias. What in ambush under the Lutugino sat their, doubt was gone. Finally, there was the first official comment:

Security officials LNR under Lugansk during major raids killed the ringleader of the gang with the Callsign “Batman” and arrested his accomplices suspected of committing grave and especially grave crimes. About this Luganskinform reported in the press service of the Prosecutor General’s office LNR. On Dec 30 2014, General Prosecutor’s office LNR instituted criminal proceedings against members of the battalion RRT “Batman”, with the call signs “Maniac”, “omega”, “Duck”, “Chechen”, “Batman”, “Luis”, “Fobus”, “Janek”, “Crest”, “Saturday”, “Zeman”, “Pill” and others, on the illegal imprisonment of two or more persons, torture using weapons and killings, abductions of civilians, unlawful imprisonment, extortion and robbery.

In the autumn, after Minsk, "Batman" wanted to take part in the presidential elections in LC, but he wasn't admitted to them, because the goal of the elections was the victory of the Moscow approved candidate Plotnitsky, and people like Bednov that could gain a significant percentage of the votes were undesirable. Attempt to register as a candidate ended withshooting wound. Bednov eventually reconciled himself with this, and joined the LNR army as chief of staff of the 4th motorized infantry brigade and officially became a lieutenant colonelof the LNR armed forces.

Why are they doing this?

I covered this in another thread today-- removing the not so easy to control thugs to be replaced by Russian military. It has been happening all over the occupied zones in the east.
Some of the hired thugs are not so keen to leave--so in places the rogue elements are fighting both Ukrainian and Russian troops--you can guess how well they are doing!!
Another link that says much the same in another way!!

Shooters urged militants to leave the "New Russia" after the murder of "Batman" (video)
Shooters believes that the murder happened in the spirit Bednova showdown 90s. One of the former leaders of the "DNR" Igor Gunmen urged militants to leave their jobs and return home, as he did in August last year. He said, commenting on the murder of one of the warlords group "LC" Alexei Bednova ("Batman").

According to Strelkova, Bednova murder was committed in order to provoke the militants in revolt, which "will be immediately declared" anti-popular rebellion "with all the consequences until the return of control over the" People's Republic "Kiev" under the pretext of "liquidation gangster lawlessness."

"I was not trying to fight for power in the" New Russia "and left his post, including to avoid such situations ... So I call to follow what he did. In the full understanding that the other option would be bloody, senseless and end tragically, "- said Fusiliers.

According to Strelkova murder Bednova Prove held in the worst traditions of "showdown" bandit groups 90.

"One thing I can say whatever the motives can cover up the murder, even if San Sanych (" Batman "- Ed.) And six of his fighters were demons in the flesh, to destroy them, as has been done - has not the slightest sign of any Law ( even emergency), or basic human decency. If the "Batman" deserved arrest and even execution, it had not prodelyvat by bandit ambush, even if the organizers of the ambush would call it a special operation, "- he said.

Sorry but I don't find it disturbing.  There are still civilians in that area.  The last thing they need to be subject to is a rogue criminal like this "Batman" character who was robbing, pillaging and terrorizing innocent people.  If it's Russian military intelligence behind this I say good.  There is not much chance of Ukraine seizing back this territory.  However if Russia is getting rid of the worst elements in that area so that the remaining people can have some semblance of a normal life; well that is a good thing.

From your link:

excerpt
"Such occurrences appear to have eerie echoes of the Stalinist era of terror in the former Soviet Union, where preemptive accusations were commonplace.

Wendy Goldman, a professor of history at Carnegie Mellon University and author of "Inventing The Enemy: Denunciation And Terror In Stalin's Russia," argues that the tactic played a major role in intensifying and spreading fear and repression under Stalin.

In a 2011 interview about her book, Goldman argued that "ordinary Soviet citizens participated widely and actively in the Terror."

"These behaviors were motivated by genuine belief in alleged enemies, by fear of exposure or attack, and in many cases by both," Goldman said. "Faith in and fear of the state operated at the same time and often were intertwined in the responses of the same person. Many of the strategies that people used to protect themselves increased the risk to others and help spread the terror."
