Shadow, I would happily buy you a beer.  We may disagree on how you view Eastern Ukraine, but I love your point of view on life and your droll sense of humor.  You're good people.

Now if we can only convince the people we know in Ukraine and Russia that it is possible to have mutual respect and work out things even if you disagree, we could make 2015 a lot better for all those on the ground there.

Since the ruble is not worth much and dirt doesn't taste very good maybe they should just eat rubles.

No need. Chickens are still laying eggs, cows are producing milk and the big one will be slaughtered in spring.
there is corn and cabbage in the barn, and some melons under the bed.
Neighbours have sheep meat in the freezer, samagon will last until spring.
And for none of this a single rouble is needed.

You are talking about farmers with land in the countryside.  Not all the people in cities can afford the prices they are now charging, and the demand for food is very high since Putin foolishly put sanctions against Western food.

This is 20 minutes from Moscow, one hour travel from my inlaws. Prices of some products have risen indeed, but most of the demand due to the holiday season. There are people who can no longer afford food, just like there always have been.
But at this time Europe is more enjoying the low prices as Russia is left without food.
Did you hear anything about Turkey suddenly importing a lot of European food products, and raising their export to Russia?

Which can hurt demand eventually which can harm the export economies of these countries (Japan and Germany) in this case.

Ruble is not worthless, but yes- everything is more expensive.
Guys, we had 4 TIMES drop of ruble over one week in 1998 and Russia is still there, always will be.

VW sold 200k cars to Germany in 2013...of course this isn't important to you being you are in Australia but that is a significant number for a company to just potentially give up..as it translates into real jobs lost.  :crackwhip:

What has VW selling 200,000 cars in Germany got to do with the Russian economy going down the drain?

If you can't keep up with the conversation then you should reread how the flow went and how this subject got broached.  BUT since you need a little help, the point is that both countries are potentially harmed...

Fathertime!

Try to keep up with events in Russia.  VW is not about to lose these sales.  Because the Ruble has been turning to rubble anyone with money has been purchasing new cars as a method to store their wealth.  Those VW's might cost a lot more but it's highly likely that the same number (or more) will be sold.

edit to add
I'm assuming that you made a typo and you meant that VW sold 200k cars to Russia

It is not only new cars. Russians are also loading up on Ikea furniture and hoarding groceries in supermarkets. Basically they prefer to possess anything other than their national currency.

The Russian mentality seems to be that surviving failure is something to be proud of.

Why try to remain a normal member of the rest of the World when you expect failure?
