Russian officials reacted thusly:

Russia has accused Prince Charles of making outrageous and low remarks in comparing Vladimir Putin with Adolf Hitler, as the fallout from the comments threatens to descend into a diplomatic row.

The delayed but furious response to the prince's comments came before a meeting with the Foreign Office which was demanded by the Russian embassy in London.

In a statement on Thursday, the embassy said: "The outrageous remarks made by Prince Charles in Canada will be among the questions raised. The embassy asked the FCO for official clarifications on that yesterday."

... The prince is reported to have made his comments during a private conversation with a Jewish survivor of the second world war about the dispute over Russia's annexation of Crimea. "Now Putin is doing just about the same as Hitler,"he told Marianne Ferguson, a volunteer at the Canadian Museum of Immigration in Halifax.

Everyone agrees that the remark was made in a private conversation.  Without getting into how inaccurate or inappropriate it may have been, how did it become a matter of public record?  Or am I just being too naive in thinking that private conversations should remain just that?

Regarding private conversations being made public, there has been a recent controversy in the US about exactly that.  The owner of a pro basketball team was talking on the phone to his mistress.  She leaked the tape of the conversation to the media and a firestorm ensued.  As a result the league fined the guy two and a half million dollars, ordered him to have no connection with his team, even attending games, and is trying to force him to sell his team.

Yeah: Donald "I am not a racist" Sterling.  People scoff on here about huge age gaps between WM and their FSU girlfriends brides, but he's 50 years older than his girlfriend.  It's obviously true love on her part - especially when she decided to leak the tape.  What's the matter with her?  Don't the millions that he's given her count for anything?

1. Yeah, I won't let anyone give me cr*p about my far lesser age gaps now.

2. I guess a couple of Bentleys, a Ferrari, and a $1.8 million dollar apartment don't go as far as they used to.  That's inflation for you.

I have nothing against the Russian people.  I remember my very first trip to Russia, and being positively impressed.  I remember thinking that governments and ideology are the real problems. 

That having been said, I don't see why it matters whether it was a public or private conversation. 
Why not be able to express his opinion. 
Truth hurts.
Such is life. 

When the Russian psycho dweeb (sorry, his name escapes me) talked about turning the USA into radioactive ash, I don't recall anyone in the US saying jack.  That seemed just a little bit more threatening than comparing Putin's actions to Hitler's, which in many ways (Czech, Poland, etc., late 1930's) mirror it.  Again, guess the truth hurts.

For public figures, there is no such thing as a private conversation in public. Unless it's in the inner walls and they still have denial. It's a price they pay for notoriety. Charles should continue to own up to it and let Putin and Russia think what they will IMHO
