Hi guys,


Long time reader - I've been to Ukraine about a dozen times over the past few years; mainly to Odessa but also the other nearby towns. I'm looking forward to sharing my experiences with other users here. Feel free to ask me anything, as I'm happy to share whatever I know.

What was the purpose of your many trips:  business or romance?  Why keep going to Odessa?

Romance, fun, adventure. I kept going to Odessa because its a great city for expats to hang out in. Nice beaches, beautiful women, good food/culture, and very affordable. And obviously because there's an international airport there for easy access.

This makes you more of a "good time guy" with lots of free time rather than the typical RWDer who has a limited budget, little free time, and wants to find a wife.  No offense intended, yet some of the latter will call the former a "sex tourist."

None taken - although I think the term is a bit over the top and implies someone who seeks prostitution rather than someone who likes to go out to bars and clubs and enjoy themselves whilst on holiday. Obviously there is quite a stigma to western guys visiting Ukraine (particularly Odessa), so I suppose one can expect such generalizations.

I agree with you about Odessa. I enjoy the feeling of being comfortable there, small centre and being able to walk to beaches. It kinda reminds me of a much smaller city than my own with a similar type melting pot. There is a "Meet Up' site there now for expats along with some locals to share thoughts and socialize.

I wonder what 'sex tourist' means to Gator. I saw no mention of sex. As long as one is always honest in their intentions, what happens........ happens

Yeah Odessa is a great base to hang out in. After a few trips its hard not to make friends with the regulars and other visiting expats. I try to avoid Arcadia, as i've been ripped off in some of the clubs (went in a large group and ended up getting a bill that was about 4 times what it should've been).

Gator is right.   It reads like a guy going there just to meet women which is fine but why come here and cry about getting got when his intentions are to probably just see how much he can land. Maybe I'm wrong. maybe they have good local beer and borscht there.

Except that its much more than just going there to see how much a person can land. Like i said above, going on vacation (I worked in the middle east at the time) in Odessa was a convenient and fun place to go. Meeting beautiful women was one of many factors that took me there. These days, I still go to Odessa but more so to relax and hang out with American and British expat friends i've made.

I can understand that. I've met some good friends at Obriens in Kiev. After all these years we still keep in touch. I've been several places in Ukraine since 2001 but never Odessa.
