And I have lived in both Ukraine and Russia (not in the Federal Cities).  I built a good business in Russia which I recently disposed of. 

My take on an economic war between Russia and the US/EU is that it would be catastrophic to Russia.  I could never figure out why Russia had to import foodstuffs like grain or meat.  Much of the land surrounding the area that I lived in lay fallow.  We were told that to cultivate it required special permission from the State ... most of it was still owned by the State.

There is no country that plays martyr better than Russia, however.   If once a generation the Russian people can't feel that they are being picked on by the rest of the world, they would lose their identity.  I can see now the great patriotic memorials built to highlight the aggression by the Ukrainian Fascists.  How Russia, by itself, stood up to the infiltration by NATO of all the neighboring countries!  (Those bastards!)

Who cares if Russia no longer has markets for their products?  Russia would much rather sell its natural gas and oil to China and Iran for 1/2 price than to behave honorably and receive top dollar from the West.

I wonder how much of that natural gas China is going to re-sell to other countries?

No Im not an arm chair politician! And I don't give fig for the sanctions, what makes me sick though is the double standards of the EU/US government. Did anyone section Israel for war crimes against women and children?? I think you will also find over the next decade the US economy shrinking considerably. Double standards Double standards!

The way the US GDP is measured is very odd.  The number will probably only go upward, which in theory would mean our economy is growing.  For example IF it cost 25K a year to go to USC 10 years ago, and now it costs 50K to go now, then the economy has 'grown' 100% in that time period.  A college textbook can cost $225.00...that factors into the GDP...a comparable book like that in China I believe costs considerable less.  So yes our economy appears very large, but if somebody pulls the fluff from it, the economy isn't as big as it appears.
