If you live in a village that grows its own products and has its own cattle, what do you pay for?

Shadow, tell me you are joking

Only the cattle rancher doesn't pay for cattle. One guy raises
60 calves, he doesn't give them away he sells them. He doesn't make
salt he buys it. He doesn't manufacture shoes, he buys them. He doesn't
make medicines, autos, or the pump for his well.

Somebody in the village teaches the children how to read, the children
don't pay the teacher with vegetables. The teacher doesn't harvest trees
to make pulp, he doesn't have a printing press for books. There is no
ink maker in the village who provides the ink for slabs of beef.

The farmer who doesn't raise beef but grows potatoes uses a tractor
and a plow and needs diesel fuel. He doesn't exchange potatoes for
those things he doesn't refine crude oil into diesel or lubricants.

The 20 year old girl with a long legs, a short skirt and bee sting lips
talks to her boyfriend on a cell phone while pretending to chat online
line with 60 year old men western men in pay for view agency
chatrooms. Her father didn't whittle a cell phone for her and he didn't
come up with a formula of potatoes skins for the bleach for her hair
or the polish for her nails.

Every village in Russia has an economy that has progressed beyond
self sufficiency. They have market economies and specialization.
They import and export goods and services.

Well he has a point. Anyplace that works on a "true" barter system would have a zero % GDP. The challenge would be to find that one place.  :D

Is that a European utopia or possibly one declared while holding one's nose?  :)

The claim, today, from Moscow, is that they have 300 trucks (painted white) that are going to enter Ukraine to provide Humanitarian Aid.  What they don't say, is that along with those trucks (and interspersed) are things like this:

That is a clamshell anti-aircraft radar.

Essentially, Russia is volunteering to take over South Eastern Ukraine, under humanitarian concerns.

Russia also claims that it has permission from the Red Cross to enter into Ukraine to provide the aid, although Ukraine has declared that any further involvement by Russia is an "Act of War".  The United States, Great Britain and the President of the EU (how does the EU speak as one voice) have all warned Putin that such an incursion would be aggression.

By the way, the anti-aircraft radar picture was taken alongside the White trucks.

I wonder why they painted the trucks white?

The mission is led by the Red Cross, with permission from the US, Italy, Germany AND Ukraine.
Guess Ukraine hopes to use those trucks against Russia... ;D

More Russian propaganda I suspect.

I cannot find anything on the Red Cross web site.

"
Today the ICRC met with the Ukrainian and the Russian authorities and shared a document which specifies the manner in which such an operation could take place. This includes the agreement by all sides that the ICRC will be allowed to deliver the aid with due respect for its fundamental working principles of neutrality, impartiality and independence.
The document also stipulates, among other matters, that prior to beginning of the operation, the ICRC should receive without undue delay from the authorities of the Russian Federation all necessary details concerning the aid, including the volume and type of items, and requirements for transport and storage. All parties must also guarantee the security of ICRC staff and vehicles, for the entire duration of the operation, in view of the fact that the organization does not accept armed escorts."

....As per link provided:

"This includes the agreement by all sides that the ICRC will be allowed to deliver the aid with due respect for its fundamental working principles of neutrality, impartiality and independence.....

I hope that those trucks really do indeed carry only humanitarian aid. After all, food is scarce in the city. The power and water is non-operative and basic essentials non-existent.

Time is of the essence.

Technically, the city is held hostage by the surrounding military and militia. They don't even need to *advance or fire artillery killing innocent people along with the separatists like clueless buffoons. They can just *wait* until all the folks within the city limits gives up due to the blockade (if the public doesn't turn on the separatists themselves first), assuming of course Kiev have the luxury of *time*. I'm not sure about Kiev, but *someone bigger than the government* would likely not be as conducive to the idea of waiting. There's plenty of money to be made after all.

If they don't wait and bomb everyone dead in that city, Kiev only have themselves to blame for such atrocity.

OTOH, if they did wait, then winter approaches and quite literally everyone plays into the hands of Moscow.

What kind of a question is it?

In this regard I do care as well (about Ukrainians). The Ukrainian President does not.

Someone like the Red Cross should inspect the trucks and let them through. Fairly simple. Russia seems to think it's okay to kill people to save them from 'fascists' in Kiev. While viewing separatists as angelic patriotic creatures who long to live in a Russian/Soviet state. So Putin wants to aid rebels who they see as the 'good guys'.

Getting back on track with this thread ......

1.  Overt military acts on the border of the Baltic countries  (Check)

2.  Military exercises on the Kuril islands - sure to piss off the Japanese (Check)

3.  New Sub for Mediterranean - Black Sea Fleet (Check)

4.  600 Billion promised to build up Russian armed forces (Check)

Not a bad month for the Whermacht.   With a nuclear arsenal, Putin is making many people feel uncomfortable.  Intentionally.

It's called the "North Korea Strategy."

Russia's Nationalists Will Rue Their Scare Tactics

Quote

It is clear that federal television broadcasts help sustain the quasi-patriotic, aggressive and isolationist euphoria that feeds Putin's popularity. But it is also obvious that the public response to the ideological seeds planted by the Kremlin is, for the first time in the 24 years of post-Soviet history, truly nationwide, active and sincere.
After a long period of fruitless attempts, Russian leadership has found or remembered the doctrine that draws the best response from their countrymen: "Russia is surrounded by enemies." This mobilizes the public as it has in the past, even though this time the list of enemies includes Ukraine, a post-Soviet country close to Russia in every way despite the current propaganda.

That may be, LT, but, the reinforced rebels took a strategic crossing point last night which will probably give them access to Donbas for re-supply.

I finally figured out the scenario that's playing out.

A.  Construct a phony premise civil war of Russians being ill-treated in Eastern Ukraine.
B.  Create the need by your governed body to cede you more and more powers and become more militaristic.
C.  Act the benevolent, by sending humanitarian aid while locking the people into continued fighting.
D.  Create the illusion that the whole world is against you to your people.

We've seen this all before.  It played out in the past generation before our very eyes:

Putin is Palpatine!
