Where do you get your news from?
« on: August 09, 2014, 12:33:19 PM »
A few recent threads have included some alternative news/information sources that have been questioned for their legitimacy or lack thereof.

I thought it would be enlightening to see where most of us get our news from.

For the purposes of the poll, mainstream media (MSM) would be news corporations such as NBC News, CNN News, BBC News, etc.

Alternative media (AM) would be pretty much any non-mainstream media that are providing their versions of the news. This could be a well-funded site such as The Intercept, a one-man/woman show/blog posting their personal take of world events, or anything in between these two extremes (including discussion forums such as this one).

If possible, please give details of what your news sources are (after you've voted).

YAHOO News all the way baby! Although Yahoo news sometimes gets ridiculed, it's usually by people who can't read. Yahoo rarely writes news. Under the author's name is the news outlet they work for. Yahoo picks from various sources. I got an email account with Yahoo so sometimes click on the news on their homepage. Yahoo keeps track of my interests so news about Ukraine and the Seahawks are always front page. I also read news coming out of Russia when someone here post links.

If I'm not looking on social media sites from friends, then I probably look to:

RIA Novosti

http://en.ria.ru/

and

Kyiv Post for the other side.

www.kyivpost.com

but the ongoing Live UA map is probably the best ongoing report on the ground situation.

For instance, earlier today this site reported that Ukrainian ATO forces attempted to capture Krasnyi Luch, which is stratgic as Donbas has been receiving their tanks through there.  Online, it was reported that the attack was repelled by the Russian News and Information Network.  (RIA Novosti.)  Then later it was reported from a number of Twitter sources that the ATO forces had occupied the city.  Now, this evening, that story from RIA was removed and, peering through the fog of war, it appears that the ATO forces are now in control.  That is significant.  There is no longer any possible way to resupply Donetsk or Horlivka without cracking the ATO lines.

Each time the LIVE UA MAP reports something, it cites its source.

That website is LIVEUAMAP.com

One more thought:  I have had a fun time reading RIA Novosti.  Two days ago they posted an article that claimed 700,000 Ukrainians are refugees in Russia.

http://en.ria.ru/world/20140808/191855583/Ukrainians-Losing-Faith-in-Kiev-Leadership-More-Than-700-000.html

Then, in a story that was put up regarding today's fighting, they claimed that over 130,000 refugees had come to Russia from Ukraine.  I seriously wondered to myself if there was an editor who oversees the stories before they are put up.  Both can't be true.  The story was removed two hours later.

It is interesting to note that Russia now agrees that the Jetliner, MH17, was shot down by a surface to air missile, but now wants the world to consider whether it was 'finished off' by a 30MM canon, from a fighter jet.

Hey don't forget to include RT as well.
Apparently they are supposed to be quite a respectable international news channel, presenting current events in an objective and unbiased manner!

I start usually at MSM sites like CBC.ca or BBC.com and then go to various AM sites for more news, analysis and discussion.  AM sites such as  boilingfrogspost.com, rabble.ca. ...

Yup. I second that motion. Ukraine Investigation.com really explains everything. The Truth and nothing but the Truth! Closely behind UI, the Kiev Post, of course. If it wasn't for this paper, I would've never guessed the rebels bombing the State Administration building in Lugansk and the downing of MH17.

Or... what is your news site(s)?

Those are some pretty impressive credentials there Photo Guy.
So tell us how you can still have your off-the-wall view of events?  :)

BTW the poll was about news in general, not just Ukraine/FSU.

Oh. ...other news sources would be radio- NPR and conservative talk radio, cable- random- CNN, Fox, local TV channels for local news. I don't take specific news programs that seriously, but a consensus sort of emerges. It's a powerful testament to see an old lady in Ukraine challenging a 'separatist', in a video. Sometimes seeing is believing.

The paradox is eating at you.  Muzh is too busy building his home.   Keep in mind that it would not be news if Muzh already knew it.   I don't think I helped.

Maybe that did not help, but the paradox makes me smile.

My answer.  Mostly MSM with in-depth analysis by internet sites (e. g, SB Nation for my different sports teams).

For Ukraine-Russia, I do appreciate the many interesting links identified in RWD posts.  Of course, I rely on my right-brain driven 15-yo stepson for "inside" information about what really happened in East Ukraine, information not provided by BBC, CNN, etc.

Why do you have to be such a party pooper Muzh?

I'm sure if I started a poll asking for your favorite foods/dishes you'd come back with:

"We all eat foods that we find the most tasty. Duh!!!"

Or if I started a poll asking for your favorite brands/style of clothing you'd come back with:

"We all buy clothes that make us look the best. Duh!!!"

BTW, good luck with your home.   ;)
