Soviet(Russian) films with English subtitles
« on: February 23, 2005, 04:07:29 AM »

We , who was born behind iron curtain now do have an idea about almost all what Hollywood produces. (good or bad ones)

What about you guys?? Have you any idea what films your present or to-be wife enjoyed in her life, what moral values and ideas were put into her mind?

That's my advice for you  Let find (or rent) some Cd-s with Russian films and see how "far" you from understanding your Russians wives.

I pick up you some films. All of them are about "Russian love", about marriage with a big age difference, about marriage for money and all others questions that you such interested in.

I love them all, but can't guarantee they will be have the same effect on you. Translation Russian into English kills many shadows and effect of language we used to enjoy.  But you should try at least.

So let sit down with your wives in front of screen and enjoy (or make an illusion you do enjoy )

Your Russian wives will be pleasured by your good behavior.

(also I remind you - the March 8 is coming. There is no need in such presents like fur coat or diamonds. As for me I would be pleasured with a couples of Cds with my favorite Russian films )

Elen, thanks for an oft-overlooked facet of being Russian, the embodiment of the arts, in this case through its contributions to cinema. One of my favorites, which I rented before my wife arrived, is The Siberian Barber, in which Julia Ormond and Oleg Menshikov star in this story between two star crossed lovers in nineteenth century Russia.

A playful Jane (Julia Ormond) and Andrei Tolstoy (Oleg Menshikov) in a lighter moment of drink and mutual seduction...

Its producer, Nikita Mikhalkov, is well known as
a "lover of Russia" and as a consequence of that
the genre of the film is drama in an epic historical frame.
What does it mean to be Russian? "Siberian Barber" is an example of how especially historical stereotypes are used in modern Russian society as a way to determine what is Russian. History plays a very important role in the self-understanding for many countries and the film shows unique Russian philosophy of life, reflects specific features and peculiarities of Russian culture. The conflict in "The Siberian Barber" embodies a different perception of spiritual values for people of different cultures and the comprehension through this, the Russian identity.

My wife's all-time favorite is Ballad of a Soldier - in black and white (1959). We viewed that wonderfully touching film together, which to me, displayed  unique introspectives into love, commitment, and the fragility of life.

Shura (Zhanna Prokhorenko) and Alyosha (Vladimir Ivashov), who met accidentally in a train boxcar. The post-war generation welcomed such sights of youthful sensuality and passion on the screen, even if only in the context of official doctrine and within a well-established genre.

On your hit list - Москва слезам не верит / Moscow does not Believe in Tears - a truly classic masterpiece, we also rented that one recently. Fortunately, I can understand the Russian language, except when the thoughts become very abstract or the conversation too rapid, but there ARE the subtitles to explain things. We'll try a few of those others you've mentioned....

It's a little like these from Hollywood... Tom and Jerry ( mouse and cat )... but the Russian was better...

about The Siberian Barber and Nikita Michalkov.

Actually I don't like his later films. The man tries to gain as much money as possible. It's hard to do with russian auditory so he turned his look to the West and began to make films a-la Hollywood - about Russians but for foriegn auditory. You are impressed (may be) but we just smile ironical at that life in Russia he shows for you:? ( and BTW Men'shikov is TOO old for that role:X)

Films are realy not bad but they are just done in non-russian but western style.( that's why you do like them :D)  Russian-style doesn'r bring money. So that I can't recomend even 5 films prudcted during the last 15 years.

As for Ballad of a Soldier

http://www.rbcmp3.com/store/product.asp?dept%5Fid=29810&sku=26306

yes it's one of the my favorite film about the War as well. With no happy end at all.

There are a LOT of  films about the WWII in Russia. It would be usefull for you to see some of them. You MUST have an idea what the WWII means for us. And it impossible to do from watching films producted in the West.  Only one "wrong" word about the WWII and you may "lost" your girl forever:D

Later I'll make a list with War films for you.

Yep Helen, it is this one... the wolf always say this at the end... the technical quality of the cartoon i maybe not so good that the western one but it is not so much fight and it is always some morale... very good for young chidren, of some adult like me:D

Usualy, i see only russian cartoon, animation film and comedie... it is more easy to understand... only my problem, i cannot recommended anyone because i don't know the title... it was only in russian language... and i have no more the video cassettes... my ex have keep all...

Russian films about the WWII

Освобождение / The Liberation

http://www.rbcmp3.com/store/product.asp?dept%5Fid=26868&sku=36425

includes 5 stories

1. about Kursk's battle - the greatest tank battle of the WWII

2. fight for river Dnepr in 1944

3. operation "Bagration" - That's what Russians were busy with while Americans were landing in Normandy

4. Fight for Berlin ( and the games our dear allies were playing with Germans behind Stalin's back)

5. Storm of Reichstag (by Russians if somebody forgot already)

Судьба человека / Destiny of a man

http://www.rbcmp3.com/store/product.asp?dept%5Fid=29810&sku=30790

Отец солдата / Father of The Soldier

http://www.rbcmp3.com/store/product.asp?dept%5Fid=29810&sku=29343

Иди и смотри / Come and See

http://www.rbcmp3.com/store/product.asp?dept%5Fid=29810&sku=28781

 (not for children under 13).

If you are going to look for a girl in White Russia you must know what these people went trough the WWII. The name of Hatyn' must be familar to you. It's a naion that I think paid the biggest price for their freedom. And they did have guts to fight back. The word "partisan" arouses the assosiation not other than "Belarussian" in Russian language

'Solaris' is one of my favorite films. It has such a strangely
beautiful soundtrack, fantastic photography, and interesting
psychology. I discovered it before I acquired an interest in
Russian or Ukrainian women.  -doug L.

This movie was massacred by the critics.  Still I did enjoyed it very much.  My wife told me that the critics were right; Mr Menshikov was too old for the part and she could tell he was agonizing over the part.
