Edward Snowden nominated for Nobel peace prize

Two Norwegian politicians say NSA whistleblower's actions have led to a 'more stable and peaceful world order'

Two Norwegian politicians say they have jointly nominated the former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden for the 2014 Nobel peace prize.

The Socialist Left party politicians Baard Vegar Solhjell, a former environment minister, and Snorre Valen said the public debate and policy changes in the wake of Snowden's whistleblowing had "contributed to a more stable and peaceful world order".

Being nominated means Snowden will be one of scores of names that the Nobel committee will consider for the prestigious award.

The five-member panel will not confirm who has been nominated but those who submit nominations sometimes make them public.

Nominators, including members of national parliaments and governments, university professors and previous laureates, must enter their submissions by 1 February.

The prize committee members can add their own candidates at their first meeting after that deadline.

I like what he did for women

Will the FSB allow him to go to Oslo to accept the prize?

Snowden not only showed the breadth and depth of the NSA spying but also the info he released makes you wonder about the UK politicians and the pedophilia scandal - surely the NSA and GCHQ would have had this info for years?

So what, UK pols were given a pass and allowed to ruin the lives of hundreds or thousands of children, in return for what exactly, as they responded to blackmail?  What did they vote for, or fall in line for, in return for not being exposed?

The investigative journalist Glenn Greenwald has found a second leaker inside the US intelligence agencies, according to a new documentary about Edward Snowden that premiered in New York on Friday night.
Towards the end of filmmaker Laura Poitras’s portrait of Snowden – titled Citizenfour, the label he used when he first contacted her – Greenwald is seen telling Snowden about a second source.
Snowden, at a meeting with Greenwald in Moscow, expresses surprise at the level of information apparently coming from this new source. Greenwald, fearing he will be overheard, writes the details on scraps of paper.
The specific information relates to the number of the people on the US government’s watchlist of people under surveillance as a potential threat or as a suspect. The figure is an astonishing 1.2 million.
The scene comes after speculation in August by government officials, reported by CNN, that there was a second leaker. The assessment was made on the basis that Snowden was not identified as usual as the source and because at least one piece of information only became available after he ceased to be an NSA contractor and went on the run.
The two-hour documentary was the highlight of the New York Film Festival

When you start piling up all the things that Snowden released, he certainly did quite a bit of good.  The questions you raised regarding what the politicians 'fall in line to' is completely valid.  Who knows what a guy with those potential charges hanging over their head would agree to.

Edward rather take his chances in court to live in America than live in Russia. I would've thought life in Russia is better than life in an American prison.

There is a difference between choosing to live somewhere and being forced to because you are hunted by your own country.

I don't think it has to do with where a better life is.  Clearly living in jail would be a bad outcome for Snowden personally, but also living with under conditions where he might feel he could be harmed/killed is also a bad outcome.  Given what he has done, his possibilities aren't too bright, if it were me I think I'd want to disappear off the radar entirely and get on with life, but I don't think that would be possible.  It seems that he wants to make his case in court.  I say good for him!

He may already see the writing on the wall and is trying to exercise what little free will he has left to him.

The Kremlin or Putin (if he's not removed) will eventually start looking for bargaining chips in an effort to extract themselves from this corner they've painted themselves into. Snowden will most likely be on the table.

I'm of the opinion he's grasping at straws trying to throw himself at the mercy of the U.S. judicial system, so to speak. The man is a traitor and no amount of talk of "noble causes" will mitigate that.

I suspect there will be much less 'mercy' for him after the mid-term elections.

That is an interesting theory, but I don't think Putin is going to turn on him, unless the price-tag was very very large..  I think if were thinking about that, he would make sure any public comments Snowden made were useful toward an end,  the recent comments might actually be helpful in paving the way for his return, if that were the direction this was heading.

Snowden is just one man and did all he could at the time..the information has been released and the damage has been done...if the US harms him unfairly it will probably make matters even worse for us going forward.
