Putin - PERSON OF THE YEAR 2014 (runner up)
« on: December 10, 2014, 07:13:13 AM »
Time Magazine is a popular and well respected news weekly.   It most famous feature is its annual naming of the one person who, for better or worse, has commanded the news and could exert the greatest influence on the world.    This year THE EBOLA FIGHTERS were chosen, and justifiably so given the personal risk these people face to stop what could become a worldwide deadly plague.  Putin was second.

This is a superb video of Time Magazine's reasons for nominating him this year.  I suggest you watch it.  Interesting, Time Magazine claims Putin had no prior plans for Ukraine and what unfolded was a series of rash decisions.  And it will affect Eastern Europe and Russia for years to come.

In 2007 Time Magazine had named Putin Person of the Year.  2007 was not an eventful year, as evidenced by the fact the runner-up to Putin was Al Gore. :D

Nevertheless, Time's summary in 2007 of why they selected Putin was in part based on what he had already accomplished and equally about what he might do in the future.  So foretelling because the future is now.

TIME's Person of the Year is not and never has been an honor. It is not an endorsement. It is not a popularity contest. At its best, it is a clear-eyed recognition of the world as it is and of the most powerful individuals and forces shaping that world—for better or for worse. It is ultimately about leadership—bold, earth-changing leadership. Putin is not a boy scout. He is not a democrat in any way that the West would define it. He is not a paragon of free speech. He stands, above all, for stability—stability before freedom, stability before choice, stability in a country that has hardly seen it for a hundred years. Whether he becomes more like the man for whom his grandfather prepared blinis—who himself was twice TIME's Person of the Year—or like Peter the Great, the historical figure he most admires; whether he proves to be a reformer or an autocrat who takes Russia back to an era of repression—this we will know only over the next decade. At significant cost to the principles and ideas that free nations prize, he has performed an extraordinary feat of leadership in imposing stability on a nation that has rarely known it and brought Russia back to the table of world power. For that reason, Vladimir Putin is TIME's 2007 Person of the Year.

Being the runner-up must be a great disappointment to Putin.  He remains as having been named just once, and in contrast  Stalin was twice named "Man of he Year."   Next year, Putin will have to be even more consequential.

And Time Magazine would be wrong. I'd go as far as to say deliberately misleading to even make such a claim.

It's common knowledge that Putin's been planning the invasion of Ukraine for years. Good God, even Sarah Palin predicted Russia's invasion of Ukraine back in 2008. It was discussed on these very Fora as the Russian invasion of Georgia was unfolding.

It was never a matter of if only when and how Putin would prosecute the invasion. What Putin wasn't counting on was a major f*ck up like MH17 to put the spotlight on it.

Where is the video? All I see is a sponsor video atop the article.

It takes a while for the sponsor ad to run.

Then read the post above

The post above repeats what I posted when opening this thread.  And I quote my opening post:  "Putin was second."

The third time you do this, please read and do not skim.

You're right

This is a monumental moment.  I need to find a place that bronzes Internet quotes for display in my house.  Maybe before I die I will hear the same words from my wife.    :)   She knows the words, having heard me say them as "You're right, dear."  However her hardwire seems to not allow her to speak them.   If I bronze Doll's words, maybe it will help.   :D :D :D

He wasn't person of the year, but you can still purchase a Putin voodoo doll -

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1437031348/vatnik-the-putin-voodoo-magnet

"Vatnik" is the Russian word for quilted jackets. It is also the nickname for a breed of mostly Slavic rednecks (though they also include Stephen Seagal) who blindly believe Putin's propaganda because they have cotton padding for brains. What better to embody their evil idol than a VATNIK stuffed voodoo doll? And what better to stick it with than a Ukrainian flag?
In Putin's hybrid war, with the weaponization of information and propaganda, VATNIK: The Putin Voodoo Magnet's Kickstarter campaign is the first stage of what could become be a potent asymmetric response. Think of it as the weaponization of humor.

After the fall of communism, the biggest mistake Boris Yeltsin's regime made was not to disband the KGB altogether. Instead it changed its name to the FSB and, to many observers, morphed into a gangster organisation, eventually headed by master criminal Vladimir Putin. - Gerard Batten

Ah, thanks - my Russian teacher told me about this word, but I mis-heard it as "vasnik".
