On Having To Register Her Citizenship
« on: January 19, 2015, 11:47:47 AM »
Greetings to all !

I've been a member here since the RWD inception, but have been largely absent the past few years. Elvira and I are approaching our 12th wedding anniversary and anticipate a visit to Russia this summer.

We are told by folks back home that Elvira will be required to register her USA citizenship with the local authorities...  I have searched in vain for current news and very little clarification of last summer's new law seems to be available. Has there been discussion of this subject here ? Are there any wives or husbands here who recently have had to deal with registration ?

Our understanding is that only registered property owners must comply. If true, that will certainly include us.

Vaughn,

Are you stating that she has to register with the authorities in Russia?  That she is a US citizen?  Is this so they can track her if she ever comes back into Russia again?

Vaughn,
Good to see you back guy. My wife is there now and she had to register her Russian passport. Much in the same manner that I have to register when I go but at a different office?. I don't know the particulars but my understanding is it is a new law passed late last year for Russian citizens that live or stay out of the country more than 6 months. If your wife enters with a Russian passport, she'll have to register it too. If she enters with a U.S. passport of course it too would have to be registered and procure a visa. In fact my wife canceled her trip last August right after they passed the law. She was scared they would take her passport when she went to register it.

Vaughn, please keep us all informed. Wife and I going over in April but she does not have U.S. passport, only green card. It would be a disaster to see her stranded.

It would be a disaster to see her stranded.

I would say this is a tremendous risk to be taking as anything is possible now given Russian actions and thinking at the current time.

We are told by folks back home that Elvira will be required to register her USA citizenship with the local authorities...

Your wife is a US citizen like you and I. Remember when you visited Russia and had to register your presence within 3 days? Maybe it changed since I last went there. She can register at the local police office or go to hotel registration and pay them some money to register. She'll need to give them her American passport with Russia visa in it.

Vaughn, please keep us all informed. Wife and I going over in April but she does not have U.S. passport, only green card. It would be a disaster to see her stranded.

Your wife will need 3 items to re enter the USA if she doesn't have an American passport. My wife has done this with no problems. Read link below.
