Old Passports - Ukraine
« on: May 26, 2006, 01:16:52 AM »
Can anyone tell me if a Ukr. Citizen is obligated to destroy his old passports opon issuance of a new one?

I have a guy from Ukr. who rather convieniently quotes this law becuase he can't prove his 10 eyars legal stay in the UK. We have yet another stupid law that lets anyone who's stayed in UK legally become permanant residents. So we seem to have an awful lot of people from abroad who've been students here for 10 years. Funny that.

Also if you've stayed in UK for 14 years anyhow, legal or not, you can get PR too.

Seems to me that the burden would fall on the Ukr. citizen to provide other proof then - like documentation from the schools they have been at for the past 10 years?

Yes that's true but I'm suspecting this is yet another 'i've lost my passport so you can't prove I'm lying' case....

So you can't turn this issue around and simply ask for proof they are telling the truth?

Oh yes but first of all I wanted to know if the Ukr Law is true before suggesting the guy has merely said that to hide the fact his documents don't support his claim.

In fact the Home Office will have all his immigration record but I'm keeping that as my ace card.

I know Nadia has all her old passports and u'd expect Ukr. and other ex-Soviet States to follow Russian practise. Haven't asked her if she's supposed to destroy her old ones cos she's at work. She's probably no idea anyway!
