Getting to Zhuliany?
« on: May 26, 2006, 08:06:10 AM »
Hi due to yet another USCIS mistake I will be again visiting my fiance in Ukraine.  It's funny that people willing to abuse the system get quick processing while the more serious get their paperwork routed across the country several times.

Anyway I'm wondering if anyone has had a recent experience on getting from Borispyl to Zhuliany airports.   I would have preferred to make the connecting flight via Borispyl but the only flight is out of the "Zoo".

thanks.

International Airport, located 40 kilometers from the city center. The city's other main airport Zhuliany-Kyiv, located 7 kilometers from the center, handles domestic flights. The most convenient way to get to central Kyiv from Borispol airport is by taxi (~30$) or shuttle bus (~2$). Taking into account the fact that taxi drivers do not usually speak English, you should have your destination written on paper in Russian or Ukrainian. There are also shuttle buses connecting Borispol airport to central Kyiv. If you decide to travel by bus, "Polit" express buses will drop you at Kiev's main railway station in about 1 hour. The ticket costs UAH 10 (~2$). If you are going to move to "Zhuliany" airport afterwards to travel to other cities of Ukraine, mind that due to delays you can loose your flight! Allow minimal difference 4 hours between the flights. Also take into account traffic jams, which might happen.

I just came back from Sevastopol and winged the whole trip. Priceline.com for a cheap ticket to Kiev, Borispol. I wasn't sure about customs and the time it would take to find the other airport or the train station. So I planned on buying this ticket when I got there. I walked through customs, even with a computer printer, portable cd player, and 5 lbs. of wrenches and other tools which I did not declare. At Borispol, I paid $2 for a bus outside the airport, which took me to the train station, about 40 minutes. I had 5 hours until this train left. So I then went out to Zhulhany to try to catch a flight. Taxi driver wanted $20. I gave him $10 and that is probably much more than the local's pay. With heavy traffic, it took about another 40 minutes.

Zhulyany airport handles mostly domestic air traffic but also some international flights to Russia as well. It is located a mere 11km (7 miles) from the city centre.  A shuttle and taxi service links Zhulyany and Boryspil airports. Access to Kyiv is by taxi and municipal transportation only.

Mr. Ronin308.

Just made that little trip last week as a friend had to drive out to both airports and I kept him company; incidentally, he is an air traffic controller at the Zoo. Took us about 30 minutes by car...

Bruno I read a more up to date statement which jibes with my actual experience at Borispol which is that there is no direct bus to Zhuliany but you must first take the bus to the train station and then find the bus from there to Zhuliany.
Additionally some of the postings are wrong/outdated as the bus service from Borispyl to the train station is not "Polit" but run by ATASS.  Having ridden this route several times in the last year I can confirm this first hand.

The only one that comes close reflects my experience is the one from Brama.  That is the one that got my whole question started as in the past I just read the Borispyl-Zhuliany timetable but my understanding now is that it isn't true.  I've already googled and came up wanting for information so I figured I'd ask here as well.

To be more clear, I'm interested in car service as a last resort, I know where I can get that for around $40 or so.  I'd rather take the bus as it can be a much more interesting experience.  I was also hoping to hear of anyone's experience flying though Zhuliany as I am a bit worried as my experience flying from purely domestic airports in Ukraine is that finding someone to speak english and english signage is a bit harder than at Borispyl.

:o  :o  :o Bus !!! I really hope that you travel light with very little bagage... by example, in Odessa, the big bus ( state ) don't drive anymore to the airport , same for the trolley bus... stay the very tiny bus ( partially private ) where you have not really place for bagage...
