LOL, I do get it. I have experience in the IAAS department. Russia can pass whatever laws it feels necessary within the country. I could care less, but am not going to house my data in Russia.

Like most network providers we block most of Russia's IP space anyways. It is up there with Vietnam as far as undesirable traffic. Ukraine fares no better.

You're a free agent and you can do what you want. In my opinion, it's silly to block Russian IP's. I come to this forum by using a Russian IP. Why to block me? I don't cause any troubles.

Linkedin is a private company. And if it wishes to conduct its business in a specific country, it must obey local laws of that country. If Linkedin feels that Russian market is not worth their time, they can just forget about it. But it has nothing to do with civil freedoms as some wiseguys here try to picture it. Again, it's a purely commercial decision of Linkedin.

Explain me why it's technically more dangerous to house your data on my server in Russia than on a server in the US? It's a prejudice, nothing else.

Correct, I block you because you live in a bad tenement. You have undesirable neighbors. I do not want to lose affiliate accounts due to clickfraud, or have my reporting off from the bots, or increase the risk of unwanted visitors entering my apartment to see what I have.

France is much worse btw.

Yes, Linkedin is free to choose. Companies like Google determined it was worth the extra effort, while others like Adobe pulled out to more friendly nations. Civil freedoms is debatable, we can leave that for another time.

Housing sensitive data in Russian facilities....I would prefer not to have it sitting on any layer 2 devices in a country known for poking around on other peoples servers. As far as breached financial information Russia takes the cake I believe. We are friends with someone who worked for the FBI in Kiev on stolen banking info and have discussed it at length. And some clients in the US also require certain standards not offered by Russian facilities.

Anyways most of my end users are US and LATAM so it makes no sense to add those extra hops.

Russia’s Acres, if Not Its Locals, Beckon Chinese Farmers

OPYTNOE POLE, Russia — Perched in the cabin of a clunky Russian tractor, Li Chengbin,
a 62-year-old peasant farmer from China, drove round and round in ever widening circles,
plowing a field to get it ready for planting — and rejoicing at the opportunities offered by
untamed lands in the Russian Far East almost empty of people.

Back home in China, he said, he never had a plot anywhere near as big as the 82-acre spread
that he and his son now farm in Russia. The vast majority of China’s 300 million peasants
have barely two acres. Mr. Li’s family farm in China is even smaller.

Analysis: Russia's Far East Turning Chinese
The Chinese are invading Russia — not with tanks, but with suitcases.

Alexander Shaikin, in charge of controlling the Russian-Chinese border, said on June 29 that 1.5 million people from China have illegally entered the Russian Far East over the past 18 months.

Reported by The Moscow Times, Shaikin’s claim is likely exaggerated, but increased Chinese migration is marking a return of Chinese influence to these territories. And any territorial dispute could disrupt relations between Asia’s largest continental powers.

Why China Will Reclaim Siberia

“A land without people for a people without land.” At the turn of the 20th century, that slogan promoted Jewish migration to Palestine. It could be recycled today, justifying a Chinese takeover of Siberia. Of course, Russia's Asian hinterland isn't really empty (and neither was Palestine). But Siberia is as resource-rich and people-poor as China is the opposite. The weight of that logic scares the Kremlin.

Chinese farmers used to harvest land under the Tsars as well.  But they did force Chinese nationals to leave after the harvest.

I highly doubt it, considering that ethnic Chinese constitute much less than 1% of a total population of Russia. They have about zero immigration chances. Unless they get married to a citizen and that's unusual here.

I believe the point of the article is that if they are dual citizens and live on the Russian side of the border, Russia has set the precedent with Crimea to protect its citizens' rights.

The number of Chinese citizens is irrelevant.  It is where they are situate that is relevant.

They are not going to be Russian citizens--  the Chinese will take over to protect their Chinese citizens ! As Bothius says - ala the ridiculous notion of invasions  to protect Russian citizens.

To spell that out for you --as 2T article speculates Siberia will be part of China (again) !

The actions of Putin and his Kremlin has set the scene for the break up of Russia as it is  and the complete disintegration of what was the Soviet Union.

Funnily enough a lot of people seem incapable of distinguishing the contents of articles from op view!

The potential break up of Russia and where the territory may go is not a new topic,it has been speculated on by numerous academics  and think tanks( AND EVEN ON THIS FORUM !)
The scenario to create that climate is not so improbable .

We went through this a couple of years ago on another forum.  The conclusion was that certain segments of Russian Siberia have substantially higher populations of Chinese than Russians.  Using Putin's logic, these areas should be repatriated with China.

Russian ambassador assassinated in Turkey

Russia’s ambassador to Turkey was assassinated at an Ankara art exhibit on Monday evening by a lone Turkish gunman shouting “God is great!” and “don’t forget Aleppo, don’t forget Syria!” in what Russia called a terrorist attack.

I in NO WAY condone bumping off anyone for having a differing viewpoint, politically.

The young man was indeed born and lived in a predominately Muslim nation - one that does NOT want Assad to remain in power and is therefore not on Russia's side ... His act was murder and 'revenge' for what has been done in Aleppo - where he felt strongly enough to murder a representative of the nation he felt are aiding a dictatorial regime. I heard him shout Allan was the greatest - but I seriously doubt if his act will see him in paradise with virgins....

Putin went to war on the pretext of making it a safer world for Russians and he has made the same 'mistake' that western nations made ... In supporting one side - 'we' become targets for the other.

I'm surprised he was allowed to finish his 'speech' before he was taken out ..

Whilst he may have been 'passionate' - his act was not that of a true follower of any religion of peace

74 people died in Irkutsk as a result of drinking "Boyaryshnik".

Is that the final death toll, or might there be more to come?  Are Russian alcoholics so absolutely stupid (or desperate) that they will drink ANYTHING that they think has alcohol in it, ignoring all the warnings to do so?  :cluebat:

Right now the death toll stands at 75 people. It might rise to around a 100, since there are another couple of dozens of people still in hospital in a very serious condition. I think that they simply don't care. They just drink and to them whatever happens happens. Also remember that they always drank it and it was OK. It's only after the producers substituted ethil with methil is when all the real troubles started.
