Putin as Julius Caesar statue to be unveiled on Victory Day
« on: March 23, 2015, 12:12:57 PM »
Upon seeing the headline I might have guessed that this was some sort of parody, but apparently it's real:

Quote
There’s a group of Russians in Vladimir Putin’s hometown who love their leader so much that they are erecting a statue of him in the likeness of a Roman emperor — complete with plated military armor and a flowing toga...

It’s hard not to think of Julius Caesar when gazing upon the clay-version of the Russian president’s bust, made by sculptor Pavel Greshnikov. The 42-year-old says the decision to use the classical design commonly associated with Roman statues was an obvious one based on the personality and achievements of Putin...

The bust is currently on display at a local academy of arts in St. Petersburg. The final sculpture will be cast in bronze and unveiled May 9 during a ceremony to celebrate what Russians refer to as “Victory Day” — which is a holiday commemorating the former Soviet Union’s victory in World War II

What is next, perhaps a statue of Putin dressed in the uniform of Napoleon with his hand in his waistcoat, as seen in the famous portrait by Jacques-Louis David? Or wearing the bicorne hat Napoleon was known for wearing. No, that probably wouldn't work because Napoleon invaded Russia.

How about Putin wearing a robe and carrying a staff, looking all Charlton Heston like, as he parts the Red Sea?

Can you say Cult of Personality?

Here is one of the photos. You can see others at the link.

One as Judas Iscariot would be more to my understanding.

I think that his current policy direction has betrayed his country.

I'm surprised Russians would view this favourably, given Roman attitudes toward homosexuality.
After the fall of communism, the biggest mistake Boris Yeltsin's regime made was not to disband the KGB altogether. Instead it changed its name to the FSB and, to many observers, morphed into a gangster organisation, eventually headed by master criminal Vladimir Putin. - Gerard Batten
