Statues in Russia and Ukraine
« on: March 23, 2015, 01:06:35 PM »
I was reading Larry's thread on the new statue being created honoring Putin as Julius Cesar and immediately remembered my favorite statues in Russia and Ukraine.  My favorite is displayed below.  It is in Pushkin Square in Moscow and entitled, The Master and Margarita.

Please share your favorite (or least favorite) statue in the FSU and tell the story behind it.

For me, I've always loved reading Pushkin.  One of the first books in Russian I ever read was by him and took me eons to translate.

This statue embodies the Master as one who could write, was welcomed at Court and always had a beautiful RussBabe on his arm.

Kissing girls is a goodness.  It beats the hell out of card games.  - Robert Heinlein

I have two favorites:

The Motherland Calls, the massive statue in Volgograd erected after the war. I have seen only photos of this statue. My favorite statue that I have seen is of Volodymyr the Great in Kiev.

And honorable mention goes to the statue of Stalin in the third attachment.

Here's my favorite one.

Hetman Bogdan Khmelnitsky's headquarters at Chyhyrn, Ukraine.

( How do we get them to post full sized instead of thumbnails? )

It won't appear as a thumbnail if you have it in a photo-sharing site such as photobucket or imgur. You can click on the "direct link" option there, then use the insert image button that you will see above your post. It's the one just under the Bold button. When you click on it you see two sets of brackets with "img" in them.  Paste your direct link between these two brackets.

Thanks Larry, that explains it.  I was just pulling it out of my picture folders rather than posting them at Photobucket.

Some other forums let them pop up at full scale.

Attachments to a post (from local storage) are shown as thumbnails to avoid cluttering the pane, but can be seen full-size (in a new pane) by double-clicking them -  the note under your attachment (Ukraine 08 051.jpg (679.76 kB, 1488x1984 - viewed 2 times.) shows that this was done twice ;).

In-post pictures (from the Internet), on the other hand, are shown in their original size. Before the last platform update, one could edit their display size, but no longer.

Never been to Russia . . .

The City founders on the Maidan, Philip Orlik, Bulgakov, many of those statues were done by the same man who won the order of the Soviet Union for excellence in sculpture.

Lviv, where do I begin?  The whole city os mostly beautiful . . .
