Hi everyone,

Luckylovers wrote an article about how to avoid being scammed while online dating.  The takeaway is:  Never ever send money to anyone you have never met IN PERSON before!  Here is the entire article for newbies to online dating.   http://lidasmall.hubpages.com/hub/How-To-Avoid-Russian-Online-Dating-Scams

Also, we would be grateful for any more tips that we can add to the list.

Best,
Lida  :)

..and I disagree ...
 :D

I, personally - have sent money before meeting a women for taxis, first nights accommodation and even non-transferable, non redeemable airline tickets.

I've never been scammed. Now, this might be because the ladies were more mature...

If a guy is going to visit them and they will meet you at the airport - and it is a long distance away - it is more romantic and so often much more cost effective to let a local  pre-book and be there to meet you.

Never, EVER pay for house hold bills, medical emergencies, etc.

If you bring the lady to you, you can make the visa / air-tickets your concern / responsibilty. There is no need to use an agent as most nations require the visa national to present themselves for interview or finger-print scans.

I think it's a good general rule not to send money to a girl you haven't met. But I too have violated this rule and suffered no ill effects. I planned to meet a girl in a third city. I looked for flights that I could book for her and could not find any good flights.  All flights I found were either astoundingly expensive or involved a layover of 24 hours. She lived in a remote part of Russia. We discussed the problem and came up with the idea that she would try to see if she could find a good flight. She did find a decent flight and I wired her the money.  But the next time I talked to her she told me that her mother told her that a bus ride would be much less expensive, so she bought a bus ticket.

The bus ride was 24 hours. I told her that it would be easier to take the plane, but she wouldn't do it. I met her at the bus station at our destination and we went right to buy her return ticket, then she handed me the cash representing the amount she saved by taking the bus. It was most of the amount I had wired to her.

And it wasn't because she was mature. She was considerably younger than all the forum experts suggest. But we had talked for several months and I was fairly sure that she wasn't a scammer.

Another good example of  how 'scammers' are the rarity and most women are reasonable and try to be careful with your money and use it wisely.

The 'rule' is sound, but there are exceptions to any rule.

I've had a lady pay for her own visa to come to me - so she was trusting ME ..
