I too detest those. The fashion for shorts had them continue to get longer all the time. Now they might as well be Capri pants.

Have never seen women fight, but when I read or hear about it, always comes to mind the question about how dangerous it is to the breasts. 

Not sure, but they might hurt along the order of testicles when hit hard.

And, more seriously, wouldn't bruises to breasts be strong candidates to turn into cancers?

Under Section 8 of the rules women MMA fighters must wear chest protection. It has been discussed making chest strikes illegal as well.

It originally served as a gusset - to reinforce the garment. They have since played with the cut to accentuate the popka on women.
