Poll: 59 Percent Of Russians View US As Threat

Kerry and Putin tried to ease tensions that have grown between the United States and Russia over the continuing crisis in Ukraine.

This at a time when relations between the two countries are at their worst in decades.
According to the Russian polling group Levada Center, 59 percent of Russians see the United States as a threat, reports Global Post. That number was 47 percent in 2007.
Of those who said the U.S. is a threat, 31 percent are worried about the possibility of an American invasion and occupation of Russia.

“Lately we can see that all the measures are directed at the consolidation of [Russians’] national identity. And depicting the United States as the enemy has become one of the structural elements for social consolidation,” Karina Pipiya, sociologist at the Levada Center, was quoted by Izvestia newspaper as saying, according to the Moscow Times.

And on the opposite end, most Americans don't give a darn about Russia.

That, Beel, is the power of state controlled media.
After the fall of communism, the biggest mistake Boris Yeltsin's regime made was not to disband the KGB altogether. Instead it changed its name to the FSB and, to many observers, morphed into a gangster organisation, eventually headed by master criminal Vladimir Putin. - Gerard Batten

Since you don't live here, where is your stat to back up that assertion?

I'd say we (the people here in the USA) do care about Russia in terms of how they could have an affect on our lives in a conflict/war.  Our media isn't covering the issue very much so most people aren't all that aware of what is going on.  Perhaps you are correct though, our populace seems to be more interested in the Kardashians or the latest Police/Black beating episode.

The sad truth is that most People, in the US and Europe, don't care about Foreign politics! They believe what the media tells them to believe and they end up forming their opinion based on what they are  fed by the mass media!!!! Hahaha, it's not really funny, but what can you do?

In my country, Norway, the only way to Wake up People to what's going on in the rest of the world, would be a huge economic downturn. If People suddenly got much less Money they'd soon start thinking about what's wrong With the world economic system instead of thinking what country to visit on the Next vacation.

This speaks volumes about an independent media in Russia that has convinced 41% of Russians that the US is NOT a threat.

The correct answer is of course that the US (Washington) is a 100% threat to Russia.

I know how to read.  I have also spent about a month in the U.S. in the past 12 weeks.  Given I was with my husband with a very Russian surname, the subject of Russians did come up.  And yes, reality television is more important to most Americans than are international politics.

I've spent about a month in Ukraine since the beginning of the year and will be there most of June.  Guess that makes me an expert in all things Ukraine.

Hey FT!  I tend to agree with Bo on this.  I don't think most people think much of Russia.  The conflicts don't personally affect most American's day to day lives.  If anything, they may have the casual thought of Russia being the aggressor but beyond that they are mainly wrapped up in their day to day activities.

I can understand why Russians would have more unfavorable feeling towards America.  Their lives are much more affected with the sanctions being imposed and the US is a big part of those sanctions.

Bingo!   Our lives here in the USA have only perhaps been minimally affected by sanctions, hence less interest in the subject of Russia.  Overall I don't think the 3 of us disagree at this point, I'm sure Russians do think about these issues more, as they have been affected much more.  Our people are still wrapped up in whatever it is we are wrapped up in...kardashions, tiger woods/lindsay vonn, the NBA playoffs, etc etc.

Sorry dude, but I think Boe is closer to reality than you on this one.

Americans, if any, that would be concerned about Russia being a threat to the US are the conspiracy theorists and the hedge fund managers.

And the hedge fund managers are starting to be bullish in Russia again. Boy, these idiots will never learn. This just shows you the power of greed.  ;)

I never claimed expertise.  That is the failing of readers.   But, I can read polls.  Talk to people gives a general flavour.

And a local one at that which may or may not give you the average thought process for over 300 million people.  You have to remember, only Anathema is suppose to be able to talk about countries he doesn't live in.  Hell, who knows if he is even required to visit them.

What are you talking about?  I didn't disagree with her to begin with, although I did question her source.  Since Russia isn't on the nightly news much, and hasn't done much to directly harm us, it makes sense that Americans (In general) don't give them too much thought.

Yes the Ruble is doing well as it is below 50 last I checked...and our companies profits are going to be one of the overriding factors in how this crisis wraps up...

Russia could be a threat to us someday, as a part of a larger group of nations....not necessarily militarily as that could be destruction for us all.

The Natural,

If you mean an economic threat than this is true, however it was not US actions which brought about the sanctions which hurt the Russian economy.

As far as the low price of oil there are various theories.  However again Russia should have broadened their economy.
Instead they chose military action against their neighbor.

So the lost Billions are not really the fault of the USA or the West; it was Putin's decision to live in the past instead of investing in infrastructure and other positive things.
