Moscow boasts more shopping center space than Paris!

Three years ago, when most of the new shopping centers were approved for construction, the current crisis was not imaginable.  Now these shopping centers are getting ready to open and already seeing a vacancy factor.  Vacancies in upscale shopping centers in Moscow is over six percent of available space, with more and more European retail chains bypassing the Russian market due to the continued downturn in the Russian economy.



The below article examines the anticipated growth followed by the current downward trend.

Had lunch recently on a weekday at the upscale European Mall next to Kievskaya station. While there were customers, none of the restaurants were packed. The more expensive cafes were muted and not quite, but near deserted.

The Krispy Kreme donut kiosk however seemed busy.

There were sales and discount promotions in every store.
