What's A Haint?

My wife took all of our grands but the 3 year old fishing today, regular thing for them, and I kept the 3 year old.

During the week most of the wealthy leave their multi million dollar play pens and have returned back to Atlanta, and anywhere else they come from, so late in the evenings they fish around their boathouses.

This evening they backed off from a new one and started throwing crickets around it and were catching a good mess of fish. The 10 year old told my wife...hey mum, all new boat houses on the lake have haints in them until they get older.

My wife asked him what is a haint? He said mum, if you don't know what a haint is at your age you could be in a lot of trouble. When they got home he was still wet so I asked him why are you so wet?

He said..mum three my a** in the lake because I told her at her age if she didn't know what a haint was she could be in a lot of trouble.

I told him that could be a culture thing with your mum and laughed. His mum started laughing and told him now you know what culture shock means. He said yep, and a cold one too. lol.

Around here a haint is a ghost or spirit.  I haven't heard that expression in years.  I assume it is just a hillbilly way of saying haunt.

It pretty much means the same thing here as anywhere I know of in the southeast. I hadn't heard it many years myself. It wasn't the haint that got him thrown in the lake by his grand mother it was "at your age" that got him tossed out of the boat into the cold water. During the summer they stay in it but it was the shock of his grand mother tossing him into it and both of them are still laughing about it. He told us this morning he knew he was ok cause mum wasn't talking in Russian when she tossed him. All the grands say that when mum talks in Russian haul a** out the door as fast as you can. lol
