Russian / English software programme and Jim
« on: June 13, 2006, 07:34:07 AM »
Hello everybody

I'm new to this, so apologise in advance if I've broken any rules

just came back from touring Ukraine

one of the guys on the tour (Jim who recommended this site to me) used a computer programme that translated Russian to English and vice-versa

i'm thinking of using this programme, so does anybody know what it's called ?

Or if Jim is reading this / or if anyone knows him, let me know

Or does anyone know of small mobile device that will do translations ?

Thanks for any help

Looks like a great site by the way

I'm using promt translation software, but always double check translations done ... you can get funny misunderstanding with them.
How to do double check ? I translate from french to russian and after from Russian to english. And I modify my text until I get the right meaning. When this is done, I use a free translator on the net with a different translation engine to check a last time the russian text.

Hi bambino -

This is Jim - I'm not sure which one of my co-travelers you are, but to answer your question, I use Prompt as the translation software.  If you want, you can send me a personal message thru this site and we can exchange email addresses that way.

Jim

I use prompt at translate.ru - If you register you can translate 3000 characters per click. I find it better to write in very short sentences without phrases that can be misinterpreted or metafores. If you copy & paste your translated text back into the top box and back translate it to English you will get a fair idea of how she will understand it, you will then be able to edit and re translate as necessary.

I recommend only using machine translations for ho-hum day to day stuff, if you try to be deep, meaningful and romantic via machine translation it will not translate with the feeling you poured into it.

There is some kind of pocket device available also, I have seen speak of it on boards but have never seen one.

As far as the hand held units I have one of the best units you can get and it is pretty much a waste. The one I have is an Easco Language teacher with voice that sells for abouut $395.00

bambino,

I'm sure you can get some good advice on translation software on this board. But, if you're looking for something to carry in your hand, I recommend a product from http://www.ectaco.com/Russian-items/.  They're a little pricy but the one I had was excellent.
