Yahoo and Google issues in Russia

Today (Thursday), Beeline and MTC began to implement the government's new restrictions on certain Yahoo and Google services.

Both RT and Rossiyskaya Gazeta are running stories on the blockage. Vadim Ampelonsky, spokesman for government regulator Roskomnadzor, says that the restrictions will impact Yahoo mail, Yahoo News, Yahoo Finance and Yahoo Video services.

Ampelonsky indicated that the Yahoo search services will remain open. Roskomnadzor had instructed Yahoo and Google to take down known propoganda sites, and certain videos, associated with the terrorist group "Islamic State".  So far, it appears that Yahoo and Google have refused.

Last month Facebook defied a Russian government order to allow access to all Russian account holders, and to hold this data on servers located inside Russia.

As of today it is unclear whether this is a permanent blockage, or just a flexing of governmental muscles.

My personal Gmail is working fine so far, however Yahoo has been on and off during the day. At this time in the evening it is on.

Since it is unclear as to whether this is temporary or permanent, if any members are communicating with someone who is using Yahoo or Gmail in Russia, it might be wise to have a backup plan such as knowing their email addresses at Russian services such as Mail.ru, Yandex.ru, imail.ru and inbox.ru, etc. Then establish a free account at one of those for yourself, just in case your Yahoo or Gmail messages are blocked.

The ban on Wikipedia was lifted in late August, however it was just this week that several Internet providers indicated that full access has been restored.

Unlike Yahoo and Facebook (which seem to be working now with no issues), Wiki did agree to edit certain entries that Russia had insisted were of a terrorist nature.

Wonder which direction the economy will head after Russia begins to get cutoff from the rest of the world? Network admins will begin blocking Russian IP blocks further confining them to their own little world.
