Secure, reliable posting of documents to Russia - any advice?
« on: November 03, 2015, 12:11:16 PM »
Hi, I need to send some documents from Britain to Russia (Tolyatti, Samara Oblast), for my fiancee's visa application.  I need a tracked service that will deliver in two weeks, so if anyone has any advice that would be welcome.

Obviously I know I can google this and work it out for myself, which may be what I end up doing.  But I would welcome anyone who's had to do this relating their experience, even if they were posting from the US or wherever (I'm guessing if you post say UPS, whether it starts in Britain or USA it's still the same guys delivering in Russia).

Also anyone with any general advice on UK visas, specifically the family member visa that can be used for fiancees, is welcome.

My own advice on UK visas - don't try and get a tourist visa for a Russian unless they're on a regular and decent salary and have savings (so pretty much no one outside of Moscow and St P).  Otherwise they will reject it on the assumption they're going to work illegally.

DHL worked fine for me - but that was a decade ago (wow!).  Yeah, Evia and I have been together for over 10 years, married 10 this February.

Does Pony Express operate from the UK?

I'd say any of the major couriers such as Fedex, DHL, etc are your best bet. All couriers should provide end to end tracking and should handle your package all the way through. For example, if you DHL something to me, a DHL van will arrive at my door to deliver it. I've shipped something to Russia  from Australia via courier and it arrived pretty fast (definitely under 2 weeks).

If you actually need the documents that quick I'd probably get on it straight away since no shipping company can control time spent in customs. It typically won't be an issue especially if it's just documents, but if you have an expensive flight to catch I would not want to miss it :)

If you use <insert your country's name> local post it will simply be delivered with Russian local post which could be a wild card in terms of security and timeliness. You will also typically lose tracking when it leaves the country but you can receive proof of delivery slips. Exception if your local post has a courier service (at extra cost) which is usually outsourced (EMS Couriers in my case).

It's probably worth seeing if they accept copies... that way you can just email everything to her to print for a lot cheaper.

I use USPS and it is very reasonable. It is my understanding that they actually use DHL for their deliveries.
Am I correct ? Sometimes I also use DHL.  UPS also goes there. Never use regular/Russian mail.
