Photo's of what guys wear in Ukraine
« on: March 23, 2016, 05:20:25 AM »
Just wondering if it would be possible for someone to upload some photos of what guys tend to wear out there to give a bit of an idea. So anyone out there at the moment or been out there and happens to have photos of typical stuff, try to not look homo while doing it though  :o I hear that stuff doesn't go down well out there. I know some people on here have said dress smart, etc, but sometimes its not easy to get an idea of what they mean, other than suit of course. So really need options of other than suit stuff, like more casual gear. I'm not thinking of going real casual of course but just to get a better idea if possible.

Don't dress like this dashingly handsome guy wearing a tee shirt

Dress more like this strikingly handsome guy

Winter look

You should make sure most of the buttons on your shirt are buttoned up and stay away
from tutu's

Depends on where you are going. For Kiev, use casual office look. For outside, make it more durable.
For Donbass, camouflage.

Trench, uploading photos on here is not easy for me, but here's what my personal FSU wardrobe is like:

SHOES: Highly important and I'm not just talking about preventing blisters. I went out and bought two nice pairs of dress shoes that have cushy bottoms. You will be walking a lot so don't get dress shoes with the thin leather soles. Think dressy but comfortable enough to do some walking in and yet still looks sharp with a nice pair of jeans. Give them a thorough polishing before you leave even if they are new to protect them from the inevitable abuse they will take from the dirty FSU streets. Then pack one of those really convenient sponge polishers to touch them up before leaving on a date. Designate those as your FSU dating shoes and don't use them at home so they stay newer looking. Of course, you can pack a pair of casual shoes as well to use when not on a date, but try to stay away from bright sneakers in the interest of blending in.

SOCKS: Have them match your shoes or the shirt you're wearing but just make sure that they aren't "holy" as you'll be expected to remove your shoes when going to someone's private residence.

PANTS: A couple pairs of nicer dark jeans go a long way and are really versatile. They look great with sport coats, form fitting short-sleeve muscle type of shirts, or a button up shirt sans tie. I bring two of these types of jeans and also a couple of dressier slacks (not suit formal per se) for nice dinners, theater, etc. STAY AWAY FROM SHORTS EVEN IN THE SUMMER (Unless you're further along with the girl in the dating process and you're going on a picnic in the summer or something like that).

SHIRTS: Nice sweaters and button up collared shirts. During the warmer months formal short-sleeve shirts are nice but I wouldn't wear that on a first date. Also bring at least one true dress shirt with matching tie just in case you're going to do something fancy smancy.

COATS/JACKETS: Sport coats for warmer months and wool type of jackets for the winter. This trip I'm utilizing a dark grey and a brown pea coat. I wear the dark grey with the black shoes and brown with brown shoes. I also have dark grey and brown newsboy hats to match.

My standard first date wear is nice jeans, button up shirt or sweater and a sport coat or winter coat to match. Your mileage may vary. Some restrictions apply. Batteries not included. These condoms are for pregnancy prevention only and not a protection against sexually transmitted diseases.

I opted to show you how folk normally look in Russia. One of the best places for that is inside any Metro station.

If you plan on going to the beach pack your banana hammock. I'll save the group here from those photos.

My recommendations:

t-shirts - not in normal everyday wear

twill or wool pants, darker color, tighter fitting than regular khaki-type Dockers
black jeans only if dressy, again, tighter/tailored sort of fit

button down shirts, almost any kind that you like

tie not necessary

sport jacket or blue blazer combined with dark pants listed above

sweater depending on weather - classic with fisherman's pattern or argyle/diamond or whatever.

SHOES matter a lot.  Minimum is Rockports, leather (but sole can be the hard rubber they use on their walking shoes instead of leather)  Go for more pointed at toe rather than square cut often seen in USA.  Wingtips or ones with pierced leather not recommended - you will get them dusty and they are a PITA to clean.

Hope this helps.

The clothing certainly isn't outdated as to what one normally sees on a typical day, but to satisfy Shadow, I looked specifically for some photos with smart phones, etc.

Unless you are there for a formal event, a suit is not necessary. Dressy casual goes over well, but jeans might be good for a day in the park, etc. As others have mentioned, good quality walking shoes will save your feet as you will walk a lot more than in a Western setting.

Russian women like to dress up, and if you show up for an evening out in shorts and sandals while she is decked out to the max, it will be a mismatch.

Dress like you would dress here. Also, if you want to wow your lady while going out to dinner, imagine you have a hot date here and dress appropriately.

Thanks for that GP and all else on here, its made it a bit clearer for me the sort of lines to work along. I've got some dress shoes that should be fine for the one or two more formal occasions - they are nice looking I think, unfortunately think leather sole. So I think I will need to get some semi-casual shoes, almost certainly in black for the daytime/more everyday stuff. I've got some dark blue/black trainers but there probably not smart enough and had them a good couple of years or so now I'll keep them for more domestic stuff back home. Find the gel insole inserts good though for walking which they have so see if I can do the same for shoes if there not to big for them, they really stop the feet aching a lot when walking which can be a real pain.

TC--I say this everytime this type of question arises--I don't know what age and circumstance you are in--- the "look" you don't want  is the American country club look !
What you wear depends a lot on your physical characteristics- & age !
On shoes-- the weather will soon improve to spring( in the next week or so) . You can do a very serious amount of walking- so make sure all shoes are more than dress( & spotlessly clean of course).
Guys mention walking--and if you are not used to it( who is? !!) it can be hard work .

Apparently you haven't been in Ukraine very much!!! If you went to Odesa in summer mostly everyone is in some sort of shorts( if not working). Even in Kiev, I will wear shorts if walking on centre area or visiting Hydropark area( lots of sunbathers there!!!!

T-shirts are fine as long as they aren't the cheap kind,,,,I like the tighter fit. Sandals are a must if going to beach areas.

I am not a sport coat guy...so nice sweaters or nice light/heavy jackets can impress.

One last thing about shoes. I dated a girl and it was first thing she noticed in a guy, if she was impressed then you get her attention!!!  Other girls were more impressed with tight dress jeans showing some booty!!!! :P

Yep-- in hot weather and daylight-yes.
Generally speaking-- I have always tried to not overformalise any first meeting.
I said above-- your size ( weight to height ratio) age etc can dictate how you dress-- and what is appropriate at any given time.
On one trip-my luggage went missing in Dubai and I arrived in summertime Ukraine  with only  the clothes I wore on flight-plus  shorts, polo shirt, a pair of jocks and sandals. I spent 10 days before my bags caught up to me!
It was in a very hot spell - and I basically lived in those shorts !
It did show me how little I could get away with!

To be fair, the same could be said about pretty much anywhere though (the mismatch part).

Don't ever travel to FSU with shoes that are not well broken in and ready for long distance walking.

Exactly,

Either you break in your shoes or they will break in your feet. A little
bit of foot powder or talcum powder will keep your feet dry and warm
in the winter and dry and cool in the summer. A dry foot is a happy foot.
