Moby, did the Smooth Operator from RWG take your photo with a young dyev and post it somewhere?  Smooth Operator loved ridiculing western men.

Hi Phil,

to my knowledge I've not been filmed 'in action ' / 'awkward moments' without my prior knowledge - My 'bee in the bonnet' is purely based on what I wouldn't do and think is tasteless.

Are you convinced that you alone controlled the "secret" of face recognition software?

Of course not ....I foolishly brought the particular brand up .... then when testing it further found it was useless - if the lady chose her settings, wisely.

I don't get this part of your post

Jone suggested I was 'fibbing' as to my reasons for not mentioning the software name...

That doesn't make you right in your position.

It is my opinion - I don't think you are correct. It is a matter of taste.... manners..

You should be able to find Jack and I's 'debate' on here...

I notice you've taken and posted plenty. You didn't seem to have an objection then?

I haven't posted photos of anyone without their permission ....

And that, I think, is the crux of the matter.  It's not the legality of taking the photos, or even posting them - it's the morality.  How would you feel if someone else took photos of you and posted them on a forum (such as this) without your permission?  If you would feel uncomfortable, then don't do it yourself.

I beg to differ - it can be construed as harassment. Jone deliberately sited himself on McDonald's property to capture - his words - 'awkward' moments...then shared the images in chat ....

Although what he did was a bit silly...what is becoming clear that you are just trying to even a score with him or something....Different people are going to have a different sense of what is right or wrong....he didn't do anything at McDonalds THAT bad.  I've heard of far far worse stories from foreign travelers.

Here is where you and I are going to differ. If you are taking someone's photo of something they are doing in public, you don't need permission no matter what you are doing with the photo. Making money with it does cause complications. It isn't about manners or taste. Your and my photo is taken a hundred times or more a day, has anyone ever asked your permission? That said; taking the photo in private and making it public I would agree is bad taste and manners (also illegal is many places).

That would make then, no difference in yours and jones photos. You are railing against jone for doing the same thing as you. That would be my opinion. Personally, I don't take or post photos so I have no bias here  ;)

That's not even legally correct in England and Wales...

I doubt that Jone was that crass

I countered that misconception re UK VIDEO cameras - I am pretty sure no one is deliberately photographing me 'hundreds of times a day'..

When have I taken - then used photos - of people without their permission - particularly in awkward situations and then shared the photos ?..

I don't believe that. Can you quote the exact law?

The street itself was called Sovietskaya--has now been renamed  in the purge of removing Soviet era  place and street names-- but most still use the old name when describing it--It can add a lot of confusion!

Jay,

I was looking at Google Maps and had this same dilemma myself; I could not find Sovietskaya anywhere other than knowing it was near McDonalds and having seen videos of it, so I though a probable name change under recent de-communisation laws but it seems not to be published and several searches turned up no results, which left me feeling rather stupid!

Can you clarify the new name? Looking at advertised apartments for Sovietskaya is this now Soborna Street?

SOBORNA St   is new name for SOVIETSKAYA.
No reason to feel stupid--it can be really confusing. English,Russian,Ukrainian spelling--plus renaming  of places and streets is confusing. I use 2 GPS and often need to resort to 2012 maps and names I recall to find anything!!

Also of note-- what was a major cross street--Lenina Ave --is now   Tsentralnyi Ave

Those 2 streets are the intersection referred to above.

Actually, Jay,

He is correct.  According to the google map that I just looked at, Lyndontom is correct.  The street is SOBORNA.  Moskovska is one block over.

and one more little correction:

Unlike the other forum, anything brought up on chat is deleted after it disappears from the page.  There is no threat to the permanent posting of these pictures on the internet.  I would do it again as we have done.  It is the perfect place to share pictures.  And I would invite every poster (except Moby who obviously doesn't understand the purpose of this forum) to come and join us.

Thanks for clarifying gents, I knew it had to be in the general area, it looks like a busy part of town especially with the McDonalds as a social hub.

I read that also on one website, which confused me even more as I could not find that street at all on google maps no matter how many variations of spelling I used!  :wallbash:  Apologies if I have de-railed this thread somewhat.

Are there any other reputable agencies in Nikolaev? I read somewhere yesterday that there were hundreds plying their trade (admittedly the article stretched back around 5 years) but after searching for a genuine independent one I can only find the one in the title of this thread. I use the terms genuine and independent very loosely, but by that I mean any 'agency' which is not a clone of Natashaweb or Anastasiaweb.

I am not supporting the use solely of agencies in any search, as the experienced heads here have emphasised, but any other suggestions to use in a multi-pronged approach would be welcome.

Don't even bother with the agencies there. There are literally 100's.

I know there are several expats there..... some teaching English classes, that would be the only way to go there. Someone living there that can advise. I knew a guy, I think named Bill Green.

According to maps, it is Soborna. The area is so compact who knows what things are actually called there.
Interesting fact, the well know McDonalds is not on Soborna, its address is on Admirala Makarova. I always thought it was on Sovetskaya...facing the main street. Shows the fading memories. :o

You're correct. Bill Green is his name. He's been teaching English there for some years. I assume he is still there, although I'm not sure.

Thanks, I will certainly take it under advisement. My plans are not set in stone yet, so there is flexibility to still visit another city or cities.

It is on the corner  -- as I described above. Your spelling of Sovetskaya is correct I think--but I also see it spelt the other way.
Most people would say McD's faces Soborna.

For first time visitors -precise address is very important!

Not advice but when I looked for an area to explore/base my self, I picked Odesa/Nikolaev/Chisinau. Nik-Odesa 2 hour drive. Odesa-Chisinau is 5 hour bus ride($12).
I have a good friend in Chisinau that can help anyone wanting to check out city(area). Good to pick an area and concentrate on it. I have several areas now, so I can fly around a bit and still feel comfortable. I must say , I feel at home in Odesa, JMO.

That magic corner that I talked of is on Ad. Makarova and Soborna.  McDonalds has entries on both streets but most people walk in through Soborna (the old Sovietskaya).
