A word to the wise from the guy who is not posting anymore
« on: July 03, 2006, 06:29:48 AM »
My wife has spent about 90 minutes in a dental chair undergoing a complete exam. My dentist told me if an American dentist was to perform this kind of work he would be locked up. He said it is the standard in FSU.

For those of you wanting to save money by going to the FSU for dental work I would think twice.

You may have a great smile but what is beneath the crowns and bridges may not be so pretty. Her dentist did cosmetic work on top of crumbling teeth. She will most likely need to see a periodontist, orthodonist and dentist before all is over.
To say the least I am extremely upset about this. The man I spoke with is not a money grabbing person but a very compassionate, concerned dentist whose opinion I value.

Clyde,

That is my impression also.  We've replacd her bridge, put on 8 crowns so far with about 5 more to go.  Between me and insurance we are at 12K and on-target for the 20K that was estimated.  We are coming up on her 1 year aniversary of arriving here on 7/27.

I'm sure there are some good dentists in the major cities who were western trained and use western material and methods but I think you will pay close to western prices.  Most FSU women do not have that type of work done so unless she is geneticly predisposed to good teeth, they will need a lot of attention.

yet another great non posting for Clyde, the man who does not exisit.

I had posted elsewhere the other day that Lena's son, Lena is an MD, needed a tooth fixed so she contacted one of her dentist friends to preform the work but instead of using the local Russian materials they took the time to have the needed supplies imported from the US. Even the Russians will not use Russian if they do not have to so why any of our boys would travel to Russia to  have cheap dental work preformed is beyond me. It only speaks to how cheap they really are. Cheap airfare, cheap hotel, cheap dental work...cheapskate.

I am not ready to state that marrying an FSU woman is akin to buying a horse I do sense on simularity. I think it would behove us to check her teeth before we make the final commitment to bring her aboard. I am going to meet a woman for the first time in about 6 weeks. One of my plans is to try to get a look at the condition of her teeth during our meeting. I think it will be easy to do.

I have spoken with my dentist twice today. He is very concerned and  is actually working on an affordable treatment plan. Still, over time we are looking at maybe 20K. He told me the Ukrainian dentists are using a root canal procedure that has been outlawed in the US for many years because it is perfectly legal in Ukraine.

It depends on a dentist and the city in FSU… from my experience; I had cosmetic work done on my front teeth in Minsk 4-5 years ago… when I go to dentists here nobody can tell that… X-ray doesn’t show that… when I tell them that they are not my natural teeth, first they don’t believe that and then would say what a fine job was done… As far as I remember my dentist used American materials too but any dentists here can not recognize this material… besides I’ve never had any problems with my other teeth which were fixed in FSU too….

I've got my calculator out, Clyde. 30K to get her here and then another 30K to 40K to get her teeth, English, education, wardrobe, up to speed. Like I said, I've got a friend who has paid a lot less for his race horses, including vet bill and food. I might rethink this entire plan of mine.

Heck PeeWee you can go to an adult bookstore and get a blow up doll for a hundred or two.  Won't say no. No dental work needed.  Won't talk back.  You can watch all the sports you want.  won't take over the remote.  Won't try to feed you borsh every day.   Take her with you to work and you can use the HOV lanes, just don't get pulled over.  If you do you will have a lot of explaining to do and don't be surprised if the cop is shaking his head as he walks away.

I don't like borsh. Who invented that, anyway? Same guy that invent squash and other cooked vegatables. Like turnips and brussel sprouts and cabbage. The devil's work, I think.

Wow, Peewee,
What a telling post about your true colors here.  Talk about a truly superficial agenda!  I am beginning to think that this just isn't for you.  BTW, I have been served borscht exactly zero times in the last 7 years.  But then again, I didn't marry my wife for her cooking skills or for her dental condition.  Sheesh!

Ok,,, At least I wasn't the one to start the point about "Looking a gift horse in the mouth"  But being a dumb old Okie Rancher/Farmer  I can safely say you only look at a horses teeth to varify it age.  When you buy a cow you should look at everything,,,,,,LOL.  I'm sorry, I couldn't resist.

If you get a blowup doll, who is going to get the beer for you while your watching the games that she can't complain about.

Ok, enough poking fun at the posts.  Before I left on my last trip I got a sever tooth ache.  I am thrilled to no end that I had it taken care of here in the states.  I noticed the look of some of the teeth in Oktyabrsky and I was pretty sure I made the right decission.

Cooking was on my list and borscht was not. She and I had this discussion already and like a true Russian she said, "Then I will cook what you like and make borscht for son." She does not like American food and I do not like Russian food. Because opposites attract I think it will work out just fine.

You do have to marry someone for something. So if you did not marry her for her cooking skills or dental condtion they you had another agenda. Mine just happens to be based on different priorities from yours, that's all. I really do think that if you consider the woman that you had better consider the entire package. If you find that you might be looking at 20K in dental bills it might be best to pass on her and search for a lady that won't completely wipe out your 401K before the ink is dry on your marriage certificate.

I saw an ad on TV where they had the dog trained to fetch the beer.  That takes care of all the problems.  Just make sure you get an older dog.  Puppies like to chew a lot and that can make the blow up girlfriend more expensive than all the dental work an FSU woman might need.

BTW, I have been served borscht exactly zero times in the last 7 years.
It has taken me 10 years and 20+ trips but the last bowl of Borscht was almost OK.  It is a wonder the Borscht at a hotel in Simferpol in 1998 didn't ruin me forever.  They brought the soup and it looked like there was a hardboiled egg in it which was a little different.  Anyway I slurped some soup for a while and then decided to eat the egg since I like hard boiled eggs.  I took my fork and my knife and went to cut it and it rolled over and was really an eyeball.  By some miracle the soup I had eaten stayed down but I stopped eating the soup.

Just wondering where or if love or compatability fall on you list?  I think it was Leslie that said you could never justify chasing a RW with a financial point of view.  If you wanna save money, go pick up some AW coming out of Jenny Craig (with good teeth of course).

I guess everyone has a Russian-dentist horror story, but ya know, they aren't all bad.

Like everything else here one needs to be observant when choosing a стоматолог.

My criteria?  If the dentist had all of his -or her- own teeth and fingers, I figured they were a good dentist.

A recent trip to the dentist -my first in 5 years- utilized this method of selection and I am happy to report that there were no complications or problems of any kind. The work was done quickly, painlessly and compared to what it would have cost in the states, was dirt cheap.

I gotta say that I really don't get you guys.  Life is always a give and take situation.  You take the good with the bad.  A lot of you seem to just whine about the negatives about RW.  If the expense is too much for you or the benefits do not outweigh the costs; it is a simple solution, just don't go.  Stay at home and look for female companionship from AW. Yeah you have to look at the big picture in whatever you decide, but quit crying about the downside.

Just for the record, I think Clyde is handling this very well.  No one "likes" to spend money on things like dental work, but you have to do what you have to do.  With all the previous conversations here and on other forums, it couldn't have been too much of a surprise any way.

This is SoC posting from Patrick's pc.

I think what her dentist did is criminal and now she is suffering because of his ineptness.
Who in their right mind would place a bridge over crumbling teeth?
The 2 permanent bridges are cracking and breaking loose.
Because of my wife's age, 36 I want to ensure my dentist can save many of her teeth. We could take the easy way out if she were 75 years old but she is too young to lose her teeth.

There are good and bad dentists everywhere.   It is a shame the damage they can do.  I think you are approaching it right SOC pretending to be patrick.   Teeth should last a lifetime.  They don't always.  Save what you can.

KenC,  I think sometimes we are like little old ladies and just like to bitch about everything we can.  You make a good point though.  If you can't afford $ 20,000 for dental work you are in the wrong fox hunt.

Phil,  Interesting.  I never knew what the word was for dentist there.  When I was in Baku 5 weeks ago, as I walked up and down the street about every block or two I saw a sign that said Stomachologiest.   I thought the food there must be awful bad.  Now as I look at the Russian word for dentist, I think the teeth there must be what is really bad.

Turbo,
You're probably right, but there is an up side and a down side to everything.  It is up to one to be their own judge as to what is worth their effort.  You could spend some money on getting your RW's teeth up to snuff or buy your American wife a house a little better than her sister's, you make the choice.  ::)  Reworking prior bad dentistry is one of the down sides to marrying a RW, but there are so many "up sides" that make it all so very worth it.

First off you can't eat corn on the cob with a house.

Second, if having a house is more important to you than the person you are sharing the house with your priorities are a mess.   I have always believed you can live in a mansion with a witchy woman and be miserable or a shack with a good woman and be happy.  Actually I don't have much desire to live in a shack.

For that matter I have also believed you can be married to the most beautiful woman in the world and be miserable or one who is only average and be quite happy.  Actually beautiful and happy is not the worst case scenario either.  Sorta like the old Calypso song "If you want to be happy for the rest of your life, make an ugly woman your wife"   Somehow that does not seem to be the theme song for most of us.

Just for the record, when I head out Friday for my trip where I will meet 5 or 6 new women and revisit two I don't plan to ask them to open wide.  (just so no one misunderstands me I am talking about their mouth)

Damn,  I am starting to think the gal I am meeting in Novisbirsk is reading this forum.  I just got a letter from her a few minutes ago and out of the blue she told me she just went to the Stomachtologist and had 6 teeth "fixed"  before I got there.  I guess I can unpack the dental mirror and pick from my luggage.

I would never think about the teeth with the AW. But I have heard now too many horror stories about the RW teeth and the associated costs. If she is to check my backgound for criminal history then you better believe that i have a right to know about his dental history. I don't want a 20K suprise anymore than the next guy does.

I guess everyone has a Russian-dentist horror story,
Do they really? So far I've heard only Ukrainian-dentist horror stories. Sorry, couldn't help myself.  :P

In first 2 years my dentist insisted on replacing all my fillings though I didn't have problems with all of them. My guess is it was easy money for him. OK all done, all in all around $1000 out of the pocket. I've got health insurance of course. In last few years I have to go only for cleaning and check ups. Don't see any great dental expenses on my horizon, but I was always concern about my teeth, visited dentist on regular basis in Russia, and now it is paying off.
