Just watched this movie tonight with Ochka.
I had seen it several years ago, but didn't remember any of the details other than the Sable connection.

I think it is worth watching with your FSU gal, as it provides just a little bit of a look back at the FSU where KGB seems to be everywhere.

Maybe William Hurt even looks a little bit Russian.

I enjoyed the film and the novel it was based on. If you like Gorky Park I think you would like some of the other novels in the Arkady Renko series by Martin Cruz Smith. Offhand I don't know if any of the other novels have been made into movies.

I have the movie on DVD.  It would have been better if cast with Russian actors and not filmed in Sweden.  The book was FANTASTIC!  It is a direct look at the workings of the old Soviet system and how decisions were made at a local level.

We also recently watched the movie "Sweet Land."

Quite a nice film, although somewhat depressing until the very end.  All in all, a tender love story.

German Mail Order Bride arrives in Minnesota just after WW I.
She was an orphan temporarily living in Norway, so the husband to be and others didn't know she was a 'hated German' until she arrived.

Should be required watching for all FSU gals who think they encountered some problems in coming to and adapting to life in USA.
