Adel...I don't get it. ???
Are you trying to portray Moscow as a cesspool or what? Have you no pride at all for your homeland?
Really this figures are nothing. I would like to see them compared with say New York including Staton Island & the Bronx. Maybe La. Really, any major city has its crime, it goes without saying. Even my hometown of a mere 500,000 souls had its fair share, in fact I dare say more than what I see here in Tver a city of the same population.
So please explain why you continue to post these figures. Moscow is safer than many cities I have visited or lived in that are much smaller & with a population bordering on 12 million that is something to be proud of in my opinion.

This isn't completely scientific, but using the last published statistics for NYC and dividing the full year into 52 equal weeks, it comes out something like this:
Keep in mind that NYC is 1/3 larger than Moscow, but other than murders, it ain't even close!  :o

Moscow, Russia--------------------------New York,NY
12,000,000+............Population................18,976,457
15...........................Murder..............................18
2..........................Forcible Rape........................68
261.........................Robbery...........................780
26.....................Aggravated assault...............1,156
221..........................Burglary........................1,691
955.......................Larceny-Theft....................6556
42.........................Vehicle-Theft....................1,045

Comparing capitol city to capitol city it stacks up like this: (pay close attention to the population)

Moscow, Russia-----------------------Washington DC
12,000,000+............Population....................572,000
15...........................Murder...............................5
2..........................Forcible Rape.........................5
261.........................Robbery.............................68
26.....................Aggravated assault...................88
221..........................Burglary............................91
955.......................Larceny-Theft.....................416
42.........................Vehicle-Theft......................127

Washington has (on average) triple the rapes, assaults, and car thefts with 1/24th of the population.

I tried to work out a per capita comparison (rate), but I keep committing an error in the calculation.  Well done Jet!   Real eye-opener! ;)

 2            Rape                 110
261          Robery             1428
26           Assault             1824
221          Burglery            1911

All Belgium population is  a little lower that these of Moscow, around 10.364.000 people... so, no need of adjustement... the figure is clear, Moscow is more secure  :o

For 2005, weekly middle, all Belgium :
- Murder : 17.5
- Rape : 49.38
- Robery : 784
- Assault : 68
- Burglery : 384
- Larceny : 1501
- Vehicle Theft : 202

The only counter to the difference in the figures is the factor of under reporting, but given the very substantial differences and that under reportng is endemic I think that my gut feeling is that my personal safety is more assured on the streets of an FSU city than the streets of most cities of comparable size in the US or even Europe.

One of the pleasures, for me, of my new home town is that I can safely wander arouund early in the morning without harrassment from police or thieves, only occasionally being offered the opportunity to have a bedwarmer.

I too feel safer in the streets of the FSU than I do many American cities.

Bruno,  17.5 murders.   Is one person just half dead or did he get shot in one reporting period and die in another.

Interesting though, good post.

Turbo,  I have write that i use the yearly statistic of 2005 for Belgium... 910 murders in one year make a middle of 17.5 murders by week ! You have miss the "2005, weekly middle"  ::)
