Orthodox Easter abroad
« on: April 08, 2018, 02:20:35 AM »
It's been my second Orthodox  Easter, watching from afar... This year I've been given a little more of an insight with church services, watching eggs being decorated, learning traditional easter greetings,  food being prepared...  paskha, caviar, turkey, salads, cold meat, breads etc. I've been invited to celebrate lunch on Skype with Grandmother, mum, dad, children,  Aunties and Uncles. It's already been an eye-opener  regarding the importance of Easter traditions to Russian families, so I'm excited by what I'm about to experience.

I'm hoping my kids can join in as coming from a non religious background, the highlight for us is  consuming far too many chocolate easter eggs,  then crank the BBQ for a late lunch, if we aren't feeling too sick from all the chocolate.

I know her family aren't  fanatical, but receiving videos for her work raising money for orphans, the way she leads an exemplary life and the occasional mention of god in conversations, I see religion is an important part of her and her families life.

My question is... for those guys who have married a woman who practices the Orthodox faith, do you follow the same traditions as I've witnessed over the last few days?... Also do you celebrate Easter twice in your house?

The families I've watched range from very religious to 'meh'.  Many of the families go to church in the morning and get smashed in the afternoon.

My wife became more interested in Orthodoxy after being here for about 5 yrs. I believe that she is trying to keep a connection to Russian traditions and not religion itself. I was raised Catholic and have had my fill of church. However I'm always up for a party with family, friends and good food.
