5,000 Ruble Bill Makes Debut

5,000 Ruble Bill Makes Debut

The new 5,000 ruble bill, which was not available to customers on Monday.

A new, secure 5,000 ruble bill designed to help employers pay salaries more efficiently was officially put into circulation Monday, but was not yet finding its way into customers' pocketbooks.

The Central Bank said the bill -- worth about $185 -- would help employers pay rising salaries, but the bill is also a reminder of the country's high level of inflation: 1,000 rubles doesn't go as far as it used to.

The 5,000 ruble bill will ease the settlement of the large cash-based transactions -- such as apartment sales and loan repayments -- that remain popular throughout the country.

Some worry that spending the bills on the street will be tricky in a country where cashiers often balk at making change for 1,000 rubles or even 500 rubles. That question will have to wait, however, as five Moscow bank branches polled Monday said they currently had no 5,000 ruble bills on hand.

A spokesman for the country's biggest retail bank, Sberbank, said it had received shipments of 5,000 ruble bills but they weren't yet available to customers.

The bill's design features the Far East city of Khabarovsk. To deter counterfeiting, the bills have a dozen security features, including a vertical metallic strip, ink that appears only under ultraviolet light and micro-perforations.

It's a view of city Khabarovsk and monument to Nickolay Murav'ev-Amurskyi
He was General Governor of the whole West Siberia for 14 years since 1848 - a fighter aganst debauch and bribery ( the same problem in all times in Russia  ;D ) He was very fair guy which was and still is a rare thing in hight power circles

In order to put an end to prostitution he made prostitutes to marry to soldiers from  penal battalion He just put both women and soldier in rows by their height  and everybody was just supposed to marry who appeared in front of him/her - why should waste time for something else?  ;D
But to be fair the Governor made a law according to which those just married got for free a horse, wood for building house, a plough and etc and were sent to Amur area. However it could sound odd but such marriages were successful and such "punishment" were seen like a rather fair deal.

May be you could pay an attention to such experience of marriage to Russian women?  ;D

Well in other time free from fighting prostitution that Governor fought with England and France for Avachinskaybay and it was he who signed an agreement with China which determined the borders on Amur river  - a real success.

Any banknote worth more than a dollar is beautiful.  Even that ugly old Euro.

Our biggest bank note is 500 euro, at the change of today, it is $644

Not really ugly but it don't look like real money... so much bright color

Good luck getting change for these on the bus or at the market!

BTW, does anyone know exactly WHY the 1,000 r. note and the new 5,000 r. note are physically larger than the 5-500 r. notes?

English notes are various sizes according to denomination! I know dollars are all the same!
