Now I have to work. Perhaps I am wrong but I understood that Bulgakov did indeed burn some of his writings. As I recall he enjoyed the protection on the senior 'leadership' in the Kremlin, but was a realist about the politics there.

Bulgakov did not enjoy "protection".  He realized that he was only safe while he was of use to authorities.  He did burn an early version of Master and Margarita, and he burned his personal diaries when they were returned by the NKVD, vowing to never keep a diary again.
