..and I when I walk into a stationary shop and ask for a rubber - it quite is acceptable ..

Most shops are stationary, but not all sell stationery and certainly not all sell rubbers!

All Stationary ( noun - as opposed to adjective ) shops sell rubbers - unless they are out of stock  - some folks night call 'em erasers ...?!
