Ireland - long time - no see
« on: August 30, 2018, 11:28:34 PM »
I'm in Dublin - 'sofa surfing' in a centre centre hotel - not THAT special at 150 Euro / night - and wondering when I'll see a to let sign in a shop window...

Investigating where two really smart Russians can live and work on critical skills worker visas ..I wish they'd choose Cyprus - but they fancy the UK / IRL ))

Cannot believe how expensive housing is  and how busy the bars are at night ( 12 Euro for two beers )

If they want to live here - they can live in Newry ( less than half price - compared to Dundalk - 15mins away )  - in the north (UK) - and commute to the south ( currently)  - who knows how it will be if immigration controls were imposed.. post 'Brexit' ..

The fast catamaran to Dublin from Wales is staffed by mostly Latvians - many who were eth Russian  - and they live on the largest car ferry when off duty.  What will happen to their jobs - in the event of a 'hard brexit' ?

The taxi driver was telling us that the Irish are on one hand scared of having a 'hard' border ( immigration and customs control ) - but they are busy with Brits sizing up setting their HQs in Dublin - due to 'brexit uncertainty'

One of THE main proponents of a 'hard' brexit is duplicitous - having moved his firm to Dublin - from London ...Ree-Mogg.    Sending office space prices through the roof

It's kinda strange to leave the UK ( Holyhead ) - which is really poor and full of closed up shops and arrive in a vibrant city ...

I'm sure some of you will recognise the fella with me in the photo - and NO.. it's not Jimmy Hendrix

I don think Holyhead would ever be vibrant in any scenario Mobers, you can hardly compare a Capital city with a backwater that even few British think about.

The problem with Dublin is that as your story suggests it us being filled up with foreigners - two more Russians wanting to live there on top off many that have already come from East European countries in the EU - Or is their migration unique, lol. No many have come all chasing better prospects - money.

You see first hand the problem this is creating in Dublin, any accommodation even hotels is through the roof. The locals suffer through not being able to buy there and live a family life their parents enjoyed. We have fortunately turned away from this madness and iresponsibility of the EU. We have decided we want control rather than mayhem and the consequent suffering it brings.

Theresa has just recently ruled out a second referendum :D for what is likely to be the final time. So it looks like we WILL be getting either a deal or no Deal Brexit. Which sounds like we will hear in the next month. A deal is looking likely but either will suit. Good to finally have this come to a head I think, eh Mobers :)

Hello, Trench

Other EU nations don't have the property boom that Ireland has ..... I blame ML ;)

The Russians could locate in the UK under the Critical Skills Workers scheme - they are that bright - they'll CREATE jobs ..

Mrs May is finished - even the EU doesn't like her Chequers plan

Do keep up ... ;)

I met a bunch of British ex-pats in Spain who retired there
to me that's one of the major pluses for a colonial like me to choose Spain as a retirement location
what happens to all these folks after Brexit?
will they stay or will they go?

Ireland always seems to catch a boom while the rest of Britain is in a bust
sterling's dropped 10% since April, have moved some dollars over to my HSBC account
if all goes well next summer, and my wife likes Hereford/Rochdale
will eventually purchase a small place
what pleases me to no end
is even if I just visit for a month or so
I'm going to pick up a bloody accent again!!
and if I go shopping for clothes in Knightsbridge
I will BE bloody well English
will even drink tea!!!
not sure which paper to get
that used to be a simple choice
but the Sun got rid of the page 3 girls
bullox!!!

Ireland is part of Euroland so it isn't suffering from currency fluctuations and is enjoying the might of the EU v the weak UK govt - as the EU know that 'support' for 'Brexit' grows ever less

Herefordhsire v Rochdale ?  That's like comparing Maine to Motown ...))

The former EVERYTIME if you like rural beauty ...  Rochdale is on the edge of the Manchester conurbation ...OK the Pennines form a backdrop

The UK economy is THE slowest recovering economy as 'Brexit' uncertainty is rife ...

"The former EVERYTIME if you like rural beauty ...  Rochdale is on the edge of the Manchester conurbation ...OK the Pennines form a backdrop "

I like Hereford, but not a big housing selection, and don't know what my wife will think of it's "quaintness"
have climbed the Pennines all the way to the top taking the "trail", but was MUCH younger
Rochdale has more housing choices, some areas don't look like Manchester/Birmingham at all
I'm only considering someplace I have family, probably minimum I'll spend on property is 500,000 pounds, so I better know ALL the local details
would prefer Kent, which I really like, but no family there
also because of all the residency paperwork, best not to move around so much

I envy you, with a wife like that
AND a pool
AND no kids around
the fun you must have
I have 2 out 3...
kids bedroom overlooks pool, no fun for me...

I'd be careful insulting JayH, I mean you have a totally primo wife (uniquely beautiful from an artistic standpoint)
but if JayH wanted to totally humiliate you, all he'd have to do is post a pic of himself and an equally hot woman
and you would be totally destroyed, I sincerely hope for your sake he doesn't do that!

no one will get the bronze statue pic
thin lizzy was never really big here
and it doesn't look like him IMHO

Your £500K would go further in Rochdale - but few would be the days you'll use an outdoor pool ;((

Don't know Thin Lizzy - must be too young or not Irish / British ;)

I'm not insulting J\ayH - just pointing out another howler..

I'm sure property prices in the UK outstrip Ireland, particularly London vs Dublin. In central London property prices are sky high.

There is not need to import skilled workers to the UK, we have a huge University sector that is well regarded to train up all we need.

People will gripe all the way to Brexit day, but one way or another we WILL be leaving :D

Well, good luck in Ireland Mobers but don't be surprised if you end up relocating your business to the losing side. Despite claims of economic catastrophe the UK economy has done reasonably well since the referendum result. A lower pound has boosted exports so we actually got stronger economically as a result of Brexit referendum :)

for some strange reason, Australian vittles are being served up in 'ole blighty
me aunt provided me some strange goo one mornin'
called "vegamite"
salted yeast cake!!!!
who in their bloody right mind would want to eat THAT early in the mornin
at least you know your day won't get worse after stuffin some of that in your mouth!
for sure if you consumed some of that every day, plus god only knows what else
dingo cakes, wallaby waffles, it'll effect your mind
maybe that's why he's off to a fairer culinary environment (Ukraine, hahahaha)

no Kensington for me, even if I could afford the purchase price, taxes, etc, think what a Russian woman shopping there would do!!
last time I was there my wife bought a wool scarf for almost 600 pounds!!!
imagine that EVERY weekend...

As Moby hinted, Ochka and I bought a townhouse on East coast of Ireland south of Dublin.
Bought right during the pricing crash era and it has since increased 50%, last I checked.

A relative of her's lives in same area and now is managing a historic Bed and Breakfast that was purchased by another wealthy Ukrainian man.

This B&B was always successful and now has become hugely so; due in part to the fabulous breakfasts that the wife prepares.  Even some Irish people who don't live that far away say they come and stay just to get her breakfasts.  She makes the dark bread fresh every morning and several other flour based Ukrainian items, pastries, etc.  All along with traditional Irish breakfast items.

Her relative said they weren't treated all that warmly by locals for several years, but now the local business community has welcomed them very warmly into the 'inner circle' because they are 'business managers' of a very  successful venture.

So this is one set of FSU folks that the Irish don't mind having.
A beautiful woman is pleasant to look at, but it is easier to live with a pleasant acting one.
