I would not suggest going and just turning up - BAD IDEA ..

At least have a reason to go - other than the culture

Moscow, St. Petersburg, Volgograd are cultural for diffring historic  / cultural reasons .. Sochi - in the summer is a way to see some Russians on 'vacation' - I call it a holiday ..


Another city?  Kazan or Novobibirsk in Siberia

Why not join a dating site like fdating / dmnotify and search for someone you'd like to meet, in person ?

You can find RW(Russian women) at parks and the main Square in the cities you're visiting. Why not try to use dating sites to communicate with RW?  If you learn they don't like you, then it's not worth visiting Russia. Maybe they will like you and you will already have someone to show you the city when you arrive.

We have an excellent writer that comes here occasionally and provides
all sorts of meaningful and interesting information about Russian culture,
language, history, etc. He goes by mendeleyev here.

I think you would be well served in reading some of his many threads and
blogs about these subjects.
