More scapegoating by the USA.   Apparently we would like it both ways, as usual.  The US is in the process of deciding to prioritize economy over lives, but want to make it seem like it was the WHO that has caused this.  We (The US) are the one making the decision, and may just be the lessor of two evils, but we are still in blaming mode because the future of this decision is uncertain.

What have they done that our own health organizations can't do? Our own health organizations have told us to test. We don't need to pay 500 million to have someone tell us that. It's easy to say but not easy to do. There's not enough reagents in stockpile to make a test kit for everybody in the world. There's certainly not enough experience to create an accurate test kit anyway. If you think WHO is a good investment, write them a check. Until leadership and policy at WHO changes, Trump should continue to stop funding them. He's right to demand better performance for the money we give.

Italy does not have folks dedicated to monitoring all parts of the world and expertise with viruses that WHO folks have dealt with first hand.

WHO did come out with a reliable testing procedure and published it for all to use. CDC screwed it up.

We have our own version of CDC in Italy which reports findings to WHO that collects the data from many countries and publishes it for all.

But ok, if Trump wants out then fine, we'll just sign back up again once we stop being a kingdom.

I believe Trump's intent is not to replace WHO but to make it better. 

Trump's strategy is to withhold funding, thereby forcing an investigation of the WHO-China relationship.  Many suspect Tedros has a bias in favor of China, and that led to China's withholding important health information.   

Tedros  became WHO Director General in July 2017, WHO's first ever non-physician Director.  He had prior served as Ethiopia's Minister of Foreign Affairs for four years and public health director before that.  He was an activist for Ethiopia's leftist party that took power in 1991 after its military defeat of the ruling Communist party.   

He holds a PhD in Community Health and a MS in immunology.   

WHO has an "Office of Internal Oversight Services to provide independent and objective audit, investigation and advisory services designed to add value and improve the Organization's operations and to enhance the integrity and reputation of the Organization. "  Its last report was almost one year ago.  That office should be very busy these days. 

I worked for WHO in the 1970s in field assignments.  Yes, a long time ago when I flew on PanAM.   I spent little time in Egypt where the Regional Office was located.  The WHO people I met were highly educated from all corners of the globe.  The organization seemed bureaucratic, yet what do I know given I have never worked for the Federal government.

Nothing wrong with him not being a physician.  Most hospital administrators are not physicians.  Would be a big waste anyway for MD to waste time on administrative duties.

WHO can do without America like they do without Taiwan, the nation that tried to warn WHO of the virus getting out of control in China. WHO can't even mention the name "Taiwan" since China forbids it.

Italy had the CDC. They had enough info from enough organizations to ban flights coming from China in January. The proper action your government took is debatable but once they knew human to human transmission was possible, they acted faster than most governments. If WHO gave Italy and the world the truth early on instead of simply repeating what China wants them to say, Italy and the world would've closed their borders to China in 2019.

No test is reliable based on the guidelines they provided. Spain had to send 600,000 Chinese test kits back to the manufacture since they were only 30% accurate. WHO had to depend on China to decode the genome of the virus. WHO should've insisted China allow them to participate. Hopefully WHO can redeem themselves and tell us how to make a 100% accurate test.

The CDC was the only entity allowed to create test kits due to rules created during Obama's term after the swine flu pandemic. Trump changed the rules and allowed States and private companies to make test kits. Although America was behind in testing, we done a better job limiting infections and saving lives than our Western counterparts.

Trump doesn't want out of the CDC as media implies. He wants better management and policy changes. Don't you agree they did a horrible job? Their job is to prevent exactly what just happened. They failed big time. If the management at WHO thinks America's money is important to saving lives and eliminating the virus, they should step down to get Trump to reconsider. But I doubt they'll step down as most UN officials think they're too important.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said "We urge the United States to earnestly fulfill their responsibilities and obligations, and support the WHO-led international action against the epidemic,"

When asked if China is prepared to contribute more to make up the shortfall, now that the US is halting funding, Zhao said Beijing has provided $20 million to the UN body. Well...that figures.

Tedros was China's hand picked guy to run WHO. America had a different person in mind but China has favorable nation status at the UN because they're a developing nation and they win a lot of debates with that status advantage.

Tedros's job as Director General is not administrative.  It is more about global leadership and vision in a multicultural world.  For example, the WHO webpage highlights that Tedros upon taking office in 2017 "outlined five key priorities for the Organization: universal health coverage; health emergencies; women’s, children’s and adolescents’ health; health impacts of climate and environmental change; and a transformed WHO." 

A few days ago,  Tedros gave a speech about the pandemic to the Russian Federation's International Legal Forum titled "The Rule of Corona," a play on the term Rule of Law.  It was  attended by Dmitry Medvedev and leaders from other nations, presumably via video conference.

I doubt there is the bias you are grumbling about.  Here in the USA, we are used to having biases in our favor.  When there is no bias and a party is neutral, trump supporters consider it a bias against us.  Trump has withdrawn from all sorts of worldwide agreements and partnerships.  We are becoming the rouge and volatile  nation that concerns people around the globe more than any other nation including china and russia.  I see that as hurting us in the future.

Obama entered into all sorts of agreements that he knew at the time
were only good as long he or another liberal was president. He never
even tried to get ANY of those agreements through congress, not one.

Trump ran on getting out of those deals, it was part of his mandate. Obama
never ran on making one sided deals. He even told Dmitry Medvedev on a hot
mike that he could be more flexible AFTER his election was over.

Who was the rogue? The lefty negotiating obviously temporary agreements
without consent from congress or the guy who withdrew from them since they
had no Senate approval?
