Further proof of being able to survive on a single income is evident in some of the diverse cultures we have in the USA. For example, my experience with many Hispanic citizens is the realization that many of them value the family unit much more than Caucasian Americans.  It is a quality I admire, even though I have not supported it in my own life.

Perhaps you admire the Hispanic values more than that of Caucasians yet when the rubber meets the road do you walk the walk?  These largely hardworking families often live modestly and often have to do it under the threat of deportation of themselves or a direct family member.  These hardworking families often have no ability to vote, don't have the same financial security in retirement, or the same confidence they will be treated fairly/seriously by the police.    Why rail against them using medical resources ?  They disproportionally  work harder and more dangerous jobs.   Why continue to try to prevent them from becoming citizens when it is clear they contributing to the society and have been allowed entry with a wink/nod?..even from people such as trump.  We are on borrowed time that they haven't demanded to be treated like equals, when that day comes, and it will if not addressed,  the protest numbers will be counted in 10's of millions.  Much more than we are currently seeing for BLM...and it will be for a righteous cause.

There must be some responsibility on the individual for his/her own destiny, otherwise we must all become robots and submit to the wishes of a state mandated system.  It seems the human mind seems to fall into one camp or the other.  Either you want the state to dictate your life (and have stability) or the other camp that wants the individual to have the freedom to make their own choices and be rewarded by their success.
One factor you are overlooking is people in the bottom rungs financially may often feel they are and have always been working at a disadvantage, while their richer counterparts have a lot of latitude for effing up while having the resources/connections to recover.    IF people in some of the bottom financially rungs of society feel they didn't have an even chance, then it makes sense for them to go for the stable approach rather than the freedom approach.  I'd say attempting to level the playing field is a good thing as it will keep the less advantaged happy enough to keep playing the game, and that is good for the true achievers as they will still outshine others.
