Insurance for her?
« on: August 24, 2006, 09:14:56 AM »
Hey guys--
What did you do about insurance to cover the gap between her arrival and when your insurance picked up.
I think mine covers her immediately upon marriage (if no pre-existing conditions)
Vehicle coverage will take care of any accidents, and home owner's would pick up certain things also; but what about health?
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted.

Most of what you will find will basically only cover catstrophic medical emergencies (accidents, appendicitis, contagious diseases, etc.).  They will exclude all pre-existing conditions and preventative care.  To stay affordable, you will also have a high deductable and a fairly low maximum cap.  But still worthwhile for the short term to fill the gap until a work group coverage kicks in.  Also a must if she has children.

Check your companies Domestic Partner rules, if they acknowledge those.  Mine required that she be living with me, that I be providing 50% or more of her support, that she didn't have other insurance, and that we had an exclusive relationship for at least 6 months.  All applied, she was covered the moment she landed (as was her daughter).

It did require me to call the insurance company AFTER she landed (I did so while she was going through customs).

No dice on a domestic partner---Georgia doesn't recognize domestic partners for benefit status

This the chance that you will be taking without medical, insurance coverage. Millions of Americans, in this country, have no coverage.

Does the state issue your insurance, or does your employer sub-contract?  My company has office thoughout the USA (and most parts of the world) and their domestic partner practice is company wide - not site specific.  YMMV

Well, you could work for my employer (the guys that wear blue suits who started the Personal Computer explosion -- no not the guys in the garage).  You can only cover a domestic partner if they are the same sex as you are...   :o
